The annual CNBC ranking of the best states for doing business has been released, and its message is pretty clear. Just like top finisher Virginia, which nabbed the title for the third time in five years, the highest scorers all significantly boosted their tallies with a focus on infrastructure improvement--and in doing so, taking advantage of $1.2 trillion in federal funds being directed to public works projects. As it has done each year since 2007, CNBC used a range of criteria to calculate which states offer the biggest advantages to companies based in each--or to businesses considering moving to the more hospitable locations among them. For the 2024 edition, the channel selected 128 metrics applied across 10 categories assessing competitiveness, scoring the 50 contenders on those as well as how effectively they market them to prospective transplants. In this edition, Virginia ranked first for the sixth time, edging out 2023 winner North Carolina. Texas, Georgia, and Florida rounded out the lead group. #business #entrepreneurship #enterprise

The economic development of a region relies heavily on the efficient functioning of its municipalities. One critical factor that influences economic growth is the speed in which the municipality can establish new residents and businesses. This growth is impossible if residential and commercial real estate cannot quickly meet the growing demand. We believe municipalities must consider streamlining permitting processes as a high priority economic development initiative. By reducing excessive controls, enhancing transparency, and fostering a business-friendly environment, municipalities can attract investments, stimulate entrepreneurship, and ultimately fuel economic progress. Newcastle’s Business Improvement District (BID) company is coming to the end of its five-year cycle. It faces its own ‘election’ before the end of the year and, if it is successful and reinstated for a fourth term, will secure an additional £10 million of ring-fenced investment for Newcastle city centre. Win the vote, and it will continue to operate from April 1 next year. Taking nothing for granted, despite notable successes since its inception in 2009, Newcastle NE1 has drawn up a consultation document with plans and proposals that will shape Newcastle over the next five years. Stephen tells North East Times: “One of the key issues in the past has been around investment, but we can all see the cranes over the city and we are entering a really exciting period of transformation. “We have been working very closely with our businesses to stay very focused on what the issues and priorities are now. “We’ve always been really conscious that if we are balloting our members and they are voting, we want to make sure that when it comes to the ballot paper landing on their desk, it isn’t an unknown. “I think it’s perfectly reasonable for businesses to expect us to chase them, even though it introduces a degree of personal jeopardy for myself and the staff. If you think, the day after the ballot, if businesses vote no, we’ll all be out of jobs. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way because it definitely keeps us focused on delivering for people. “What we’re up against is the status quo. “If businesses are happy with the status quo, and, if they’re getting everything they want from the city centre, then there’s no reason for NE1 to exist.” Read the interview with Stephen Patterson, here - https://lnkd.in/eJYrj3z8
