This weekend I had the pleasure of checking out San Diego's newest public park in Mission Valley: River Park. The site has 2 huge grass areas large enough for multiple sports including soccer, football & rugby, surrounded by a 2 mile loop that's great for hiking or biking. The hardtop courts support four basketball hoops, including two half-courts and a full court, as well as pickleball. There is also fitness equipment, plus concrete table games, which can support soccer pong. A corn hole designated area is also available. The playground is designed for children 2 years old and up, the playground includes a rope climbing tree and play structures with slides and monkey bars. A few jungle gyms for the kids, child rockers, climbing poles, a large swing and 2 slides. The playground is designed with two tiers — one for older children and one for younger — connected by a safe-play slope, offering different challenges for kids. The park is open from dawn until dusk and is owned by San Diego State University, so be sure to pay close attention to the posted parking signs. Parking enforcement was out on Saturday giving tickets when I was there. A few things I think are also important to know: •All street parking is either metered or time-limited. Parking in the stadium lots is not allowed. Certain parking areas will be closed to the public when there is a stadium event. •No smoking of any kind. •No alcohol of any kind. •Dogs must be leashed and under the control of the owner at all times. throughout the park, including walkways and trails. Please clean up after your pet. •Groups of more than 49 persons must obtain a permit to hold or participate in any celebration, parade or special event. Contact mvcomments@sdsu.edu for more information. •it is unlawful to possess any cup, jar or container made of glass and used to carry or containing liquid. •The San Diego River is not accessible via the park. The river is a protected riparian zone. (I definitely noticed some stormwater structural BMP's on-site) It's great to see developers investing in outdoor spaces for all to enjoy. Hope to see around. 🛼 #SunDiego #SanDiego #RiverPark #MissionValley #SDSU #outdoorliving

I PLEDGE my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living, for my family, my club, my community, my country and my world. This is the 4-H Pledge that youth and adults recite at the opening of each meeting. In the spirit of that pledge to clearer thinking, we ask “is there a future for 4-H in Sherburne County?” Last summer, the 4-H horse project funded and painted the barns to freshen them up for fair. Imagine the disappointment as everything the kids worked to prepare for was deluged with rain through the failing roofs on the horse barns as several waves of extreme weather occurred during fair week. The normal flurry of excitement was replaced with an all-out scramble to shift horses to higher ground and wait out the storm while also scrambling to save thousands of dollars’ worth of hay, feed, show clothes, tack and equipment. This is one of many issues that need to be addressed to deal with aging infrastructure and the future of the county fairgrounds. The county has indicated at various times the desire to sell and redevelop the property the fairground occupies. That constant fear of being evicted from the fairgrounds has not served the best interests of the youth or the community at large. Sherburne County businesses and residents are overwhelmingly supportive of 4-H programming when made aware of needs and how they can help. But who will invest in updating and improving the aging infrastructure of a fairgrounds under constant threat of eviction and redevelopment of the property? If the long-range plan is to relocate the fairgrounds, then please, let us begin the dialogue to plan out a timeline and details for beginning that endeavor. We need to at least work together to solve the immediate issues to serve our youth of today as well as plan for the future of our youth. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Please, let us not fail our youth any longer. ~ Families of Sherburne County 4-H Note: this letter was sent to all Sherburne County commissioners. The purpose of this post is to raise awareness of safety issues at the Sherburne County fairgrounds. The video captures the July 22, 2023 storm at the county fair and a failing roof leaking into one of the tack/hay stalls. #safety #4H #fair #itsforthekids #horses Please contact your Sherburne County representative and let them know action is needed https://lnkd.in/gcwtPM3J

San Francisco voters are currently debating whether to limit private vehicle access on the Great Highway, a popular beachfront road. This discussion is raising questions about the users and purposes of car-free spaces. In 2022, residents voted to permanently restrict private vehicles on part of John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park. As a graduate student at UC Berkeley and an intern at the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, I conducted a study to answer these questions about car-free spaces by analyzing how JFK Promenade is used. The Promenade provides a safe and reliable path for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting an active lifestyle among city residents. At its peak, JFK Promenade sees an average of 25 users per minute. It is also one of the safest places for walking, running, rolling, or cycling, with fewer than 3% of users experiencing safety incidents with other pedestrians. Additionally, the Promenade serves as a vital transportation route, with cyclists comprising over half of its users. For more detailed findings, check out the full report! https://lnkd.in/ghHwdmWV

Pursuing a career in Sustainable Transport to encourage us all to change the way we think about getting from A to B
As a qualified cycling and mountain bike coach, I know how incredibly important it is that everyone has access to learning what is an essential life skill.
"If you’re building infrastructure, how do you ensure it’s being used by as many people and as diverse a group of people as possible?" 💬 🚲 Chris Bennett, Head of Behavior Change and Engagement at Sustrans was recently interviewed about how initiatives aimed at women and minority groups can help bridge access gaps that still exist in urban cycling. Read more about how education programs that give people the skills, tools and confidence to get on two wheels can be just as important as physical infrastructure 👇
