🌟 Thrilled to Share Our Latest Research Publication! 🌟 I am delighted to announce the publication of our paper, "Enhancing Walkability in Smart Cities: A Comprehensive Literature Review and Strategic Framework", in a special issue of the International Journal of Research and Scientific Innovation (IJRSI). 🎉 This research was inspired by the need for more sustainable and livable urban environments, focusing on the critical role of walkability in smart cities. Congratulations to our founding institute, Delft University of Technology, on its 183rd Dies Natalis! 👏🏼 'Making sense of Mobility' is the theme for this year's celebrations, with insightful events happening throughout the week on campus. Today's mobility challenges require new knowledge, bold decisions, and adaptive thinking. We're proud to highlight the collaborative work of TU Delft and AMS Institue in solving these challenges together. As a part of my research sabbatical on urban digital twins at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology's Ubiquitous Computing Systems Laboratory of Prof. Keiichi Yasumoto, I had the opportunity last week to go to Tokyo and talk with several people from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the national Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism, as well as several academics working in the field (Prof. Ken Sakamura, Prof. Noboru Koshizuka, Prof. Yoshihide Sekimoto, Prof. Toshikazu Seto 瀬戸寿一), getting first-hand information about the national as well as Tokyo's activities regarding Digital Twin, Smart Cities and the related important field of data spaces. And of course, I also enjoyed the bustling life in Tokyo and excellent food… I learned a lot last week, more than I can share in this short post, but I'd still like to share one main point. While I had been familiar with national initiatives like Society 5.0, Digital Garden City Nation, the Smart City Reference Architecture as well as PLATEAU for urban 3D models, the talks made it much clearer to me how things are actually implemented. Both nationally as well as on the prefectural level - side note: There is no political entity called "Tokyo City" (東京市) but a Tokyo Metropolitan Region (東京都) or prefecture consisting of the core 23 "special wards" (特別区) as well as several cities, towns, villages and islands - a lot of activities are going on. Similar to Switzerland, the actual implementation of projects happen on the level of the individual cities, but often are executed by local organisations consisting of businesses, the local administration and potentially other stakeholders. They develop and run the pilot projects, and they are responsible to come up with business and/or operational models to move from a pilot to a sustainable operation. Contrary to Switzerland though, both the national government - supported by the Data Society Alliance - as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government provide these local entities with much more support regarding concepts, reference architecture, and platforms, and importantly, also money. I am looking forward to further collaborations with entities in Japan regarding smart cities, urban digital twins, and data spaces - which will be needed to deal with all the data in a fair and responsible way. Exploring Urban Health at Urban Transitions 2024: CityMove Highlights 🌍 Last November, at the Urban Transitions Conference in Barcelona, #CityMove researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Universiteit Antwerpen presented two key posters showcasing our latest work: 1️⃣ Routine Data Mapping Preliminary findings revealed how routine-data indicators across CityMove’s six partner cities align with the GAPPA domains. Using a machine learning classifier, the research identified key indicators to inform urban interventions that promote physical activity and reduce non-communicable diseases. 2️⃣ Healthy Placemaking Scoping Review This review synthesised 42 publications, focusing on health equity, social cohesion, physical activity, and well-being. It highlighted the importance of collaboration between communities, urban planners, and healthcare providers while underscoring the need for a structured framework to guide such initiatives. The conference brought together 800 participants, and our posters attracted the interest of around 100 attendees, sparking meaningful discussions on methodology, findings, and the future of urban health research. 🔎 Explore the posters and dive into CityMove’s insights.
