Love the originality of this partnership, quite unexpected and especially unique in Rugby. Two very different campaigns, with very similar marketing objectives, uniting with a common goal in a one-off partnership. 👨👨👧👦 - Target Audiences Both Quins and 20th Century Studios will be targeting the same audience to a) attend their flagship summer rugby match and b) watch the new Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie. 🗓️ - Campaign Timeline With Harlequins’ “Big Summer Kick Off” matchday taking place on Saturday 27th April, and 20th Century Studios’ release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releasing on 9th May - both parties are speaking to the same audience at the same time - why not combine and double the efforts? 🤝🏼 - Brand Parallels The “Together Strong” slogan, combined with the movie storyline draws great parallels of those of a rugby team. Team cohesion, physicality and pride are just some of the consistent brand values that can be leveraged in market activation. 🤩 - Disruptive Content The digital marketing world is fiercely competitive and everybody is fighting for visibility. This partnership has the ability to disrupt and cut through if executed effectively. Sometimes, the biggest losers do win! Linkedin is perhaps not the best place to review movies or sport but I guess it is a good forum to share what inspires you. So here goes. In a week that saw the Oscars Awards and the celebration of cinematic winners, I was paradoxically moved not by “Oppenheimer”, or “Barbie” or other movies that were loudly celebrated on the global stage, but a lovely little movie called “Next Goal Wins”, that I caught on a recent Singapore Airlines flight. About the American Samoan soccer team. The historical claim to sporting fame or rather, notoriety that America Samoa holds, is the fact that they hold the record for the most number of goals scored against them in a World Cup Qualifier, when they went down 31-0 (that is not a typo – it was Thirty One-Zero!) against the Australian Socceroos in 2001. “Next Goal Wins” takes us through a delightful and gently humorous journey, based on a true story, of how this small nation of American Samoa chooses to put this ignominy behind and sets itself a goal of scoring at least one goal at a World Cup qualifier. And there begins the journey to find a suitable coach, (or any coach) put together a team, and pull themselves up to a level of game-play that allows them to shed the tag of “Biggest Loser”. And what a human story indeed, involving a flawed but authentic coach, the goalkeeper who suffered the 31-0 loss, the world’s first transgender footballer to play in a World Cup qualifier, a community that comes to a daily halt to observe their beliefs and traditions, and what it might really mean to win, and be happy in the process. The best part is, the story is based on true events. And the people involved are real.  In a culture where we constantly celebrate winners, sometimes it’s the stories of the losers that hold the deepest lessons. Especially those losers who turn around and redefine winning. PS : If you were a fan of “Cool Runnings”, the story of the Jamaican Bobsled team, you’ll certainly love “Next Goal Wins”; Michael Fassbender is awesome as the coach :)
