This year, in fact, we have again decided to renew our donation to Treedom: new trees will be added to Zignago Vetro’s forest, ready to take their place all over the world. There are now 6,515 of them. We have done this for the planet, for the communities that will use them as a source of food and to increase their income, but also for ourselves: contributing to building a better future, through gestures that are tangible and significant, is and always will be our priority. BrightCarbon was certified for our 1% for the Planet giving for 2023 last month. That means we donated 1% of our annual revenue (not profit) for last year to environmental causes. We'll do it again in future years too. Our two largest donations were to Cool Earth and Earthjustice - although we also gave to five national and local charities. Our BrightCarbon environment committee suggested organisations we could donate to, and then all employees were given a chance to vote on those choices - with our giving proportionate to the votes received in different categories. I'm not certain, but I hope that involving the entire team makes this feel like everyone's donation - we all worked to make the money, and we all had a say in where it was spent. 1% of our revenue isn't going to be enough to save the planet, obviously. But if more companies did this, more good would be done. At a time when people are looking for meaning in what they do, this makes every project we deliver count for something bigger too. No greenwashing, no navel-gazing, just one small attempt to do some good. P.S. A photo of the northern lights, which I completely missed last week when they were actually visible from my street.

One of the ways we can align our businesses with regeneration is to design our business model in a way where there’s inbuilt support for life-sustaining ecosystems. Regenerative leaders are designing organizations that help regenerate the planet, so when regenerative organizations are successful they create win-win-wins. This can look like revenue from the business being channeled towards projects that are helping restore and regenerate ecosystems. Regenerators have decided to prioritize land regeneration, protection of rainforests, and indigenous-led projects. One of the ways we do this is through annual financial donations to projects that are aligned with these goals. In 2023 we channeled a total of €12,000 (€3,000 each) to these four projects.
