Music is the same: Left hand - marketing Right hand - sales Violin and bow maintenance - operations team Composer - business goals Revenue goal - get all of the above working seamlessly so people enjoy a performance and come back for more, maybe we can cross-sell a recording, up-sell a series subscription etc. Fingers crossed it comes together for some below (we can't convert all opportunities!) Free Enterprise, The American Way, Economic Slavery Today It's the system of capitalism, to capitalize or strategize, the incentive, is maximize profits, the main target, no matter how it's done, or whose back, its upon, the goal of every enterprising system, to profit, capitalize even when in its practices, creates economic victims, for example, the Spotify music platform, the corporate example, their affiliates, on the musical artists, it's implemented, it's like a slavery system, working for cents, no particular benefits, when corporation gets, the major dividends, the little that you get, it's taxed, more that half of it, by the corporate government, though it's not legit, income is not suppose to be taxed, that is the practice perusal, its actually unconstitutional, even a convict makes more than 3 cents, from their products, labor or productive output or content, the outcomes are for to, maximize profits of corporates, at our creative or laboring expense, its illegitimate, the way of these corporate capitalists, it's free enterprise, to capitalize, to maximize, from the talents and products of musical artists, laborers, denizens or citizens, the American way, the economic slavery of today. I was approached by a music start up founder to chat the other day. When I can (which is less often than I like), I like to share learnings I've had with other founders who are a bit earlier in the journey. The founder asked me a lot about finding the right set of advisors and "brand builders" from the music industry. And it struck me, this is something every founder needs to think about very hard in our industry.... When trying to build a new business in music, there are a lot of reasons why getting a successful music executive or artist to publicly associate with you seems like a very good idea. And, no doubt, this kind of thing can help massively in some situations....but founder beware. A big name is never a substitute for your vision, your execution or your focus on the customer and the product. And the music industry, more than most, is filled with charlatans and self-serving hucksters. When talking to a famous artist or executive with a bunch of platinum plaques on the wall, ask yourself: What is this person COMMITTED to add to your business if they are going to get anything in return, and what is their motivation? Am I falling into the same traps that a naive young artist falls into when they sign bad deals? I made some small mistakes with a few of our early relationships, and I've seen many other music start ups make similar mistakes, but to much much more negative consequences than we have at beatBread. How do we value the music business? When I first started in the industry, I was always confused when artist managers quoted certain performance fees or labels decided to dole out a particular advance figure. The models for valuing so many key assets and services within the industry have historically been woefully informal and speculative at best. While traditional market investing or the VC business also relies on a degree of speculation in their valuation models, there's always a rationale or hypothesis that's backing how we arrive at the final figures. Over the next few weeks I'm going to dig deeper into how some of the most trailblazing companies are looking at remodelling the music industry's standards for valuation across catalogue, live, and brand associations.
