Public drinking is prohibited, yet a common sight on Barceloneta. Do you think such laws enhance or hinder the overall beach experience? "The argument of whether they should be policed is a complex one. On the one hand, these pseudo-entrepreneurs are made up of mostly migrants simply trying to make ends meet. Like excellent capitalists, they’ve identified a demand in the market (beer on the beach) and simply service that gap. On the other hand, they take away business from the registered sellers of these goods—in this case, alcohol from mini-marts and beach bars. The registered business owners are subject to licenses for distribution and selling, taxes, and health codes." Want to read more? When you're traveling, a detective novel can reveal unexpected and unexplored sides to a city, like locals-only bars and empty beaches. Here's how to use a page-turner as a travel guidebook.

It should not work, but it does. The Aerial Maps bring together an unusual magic, a group of musicians working around ‘singer’ Adam Gibson’s spoken-word stories, painting them with colour and light, transporting them down an imaginary road where we find ourselves riding along. If the past is another country, then yes, so too are certain voices. Gibson’s tone is as Aussie male as can be: nasal and husky, ciggy-beer-beach-bush evocative, a creature of another era that some might cringe away from. His voice is also a blessing in its own very particular way, not something that needs to be apologised for. Then again, perhaps disowning ourselves is the most Australian quality of all? Despite that conundrum, there remains a shared humour we can almost taste as Gibson relates his stories to us, evoking details and place names so familiar they’re practically an incantation, his pacing and breath part of a greater personality we inherently understand or somehow feel. This is who Gibson is – and for many who have lived across the last half a century or more in Australia, it’s still quite a bit of who and what we are too. History from the throat as much as the brain... + My full review of The Aerial Maps album launch for Our Sunburnt Dream can be found on the link below. The pretérito indefinido, or simple past tense, is key for narrating past events in Spanish. Regular verbs follow set patterns, while irregular ones need memorization. Mastering these improves storytelling.

Are you holding yourself back? Consigliere-Strategist for creative leaders. ⚡️Free Personal Strategy Ice Breaker⚡️
Didja know... You're Still "My Type"? Here's a follow up to a post I made many weeks back on perseverance, maintaining focus & then taking the next courageous step into the unknown ... Y'all might remember that it was one about that little song that just kept going, "My Type" by the band Saint Motel. I told the story about how this song took the band from being a small regional act to one that got a recording deal, manages to run itself as a consistently profitable business, continues to record great songs, and tours every year... on its own terms! Just to refresh your social media memory, the "My Type" demo was produced in around 2013 and was released on a US label only after debuting in the UK and Europe. Since that time, "My Type" showed up in glitzy commercials, films, and TV. It's become the kind of song that gets played at weddings or by marching bands in half-time shows. A friend from the band sent me a text last week that both blew my mind and filled me with optimism as someone who builds and produces stuff. He wrote, "Dude, RIAA just certified 'My Type' as platinum and three other of our songs as gold." For those who don't follow the music industry, what that means is that this little song that keeps going has now sold 1,000,000 copies. KABOOM! For those of you out there creating stuff or building a business, here's my unsolicited encouragement. 1. Stay Focused. Know (and feel) what you want. Look where you're going. 2. Have Faith (and patience). Not just Hope, but honest-to-goodness Faith. If what you're doing is good and how you're doing it is consistently improving, the results will be exactly what they're meant to be. 3. Keep Improving, Keep Evolving. 4. Find Ways To Collaborate. That typically starts with being curious and asking for help. 5. Stay Out Of The Results. The results, like selling 1,000,000 copies, come from the ongoing work of honing the process. 6. Be In Love With The Work. You won’t always like it, but you can still love it. Here's one final thought on how to direct your energy. Stop trying to appear impressive or be seen in a particular way. This is one of those platforms that is particularly conducive to "impression management." Sustainability and longevity are where it's at, so just keep focusing on doing your thing really really well. In the meantime, Saint Motel is on a massive US tour. Go see 'em. You won't be disappointed. Onward! what makes a story... great? 🤔 that was the question i had in mind when i wrote this fiction piece, now published in Ethereal Magazine. the obvious answer revolves around the four fundamental elements to any narrative: theme, plot, characters and structure. though the first three are indispensable, my focus for 'the windagoo hotel' was the structure. it is through the structure that this piece comes to life. by playing with the form, i was able to take a step further and tell this story as it came to me: alive, visceral, and dynamic - much like the main character. structure, such a rigid word, here, was freeing. it allowed me to sew a tapestry of different points of view that transformed into a plot. the theme is a reflection of the structure, with gothic and satirical elements playing together throughout the text. writing takes us on unexpected journeys, what a ride! https://lnkd.in/eXHX7MSF
