Beyond "Apply Now": How Schools Should Market in the Experience Economy The recent release of Primary Leaving Examination results has filled social media with school fliers, all saying the same thing: "Applications are open. Apply now." Some add bursaries and scholarships, but marketing must go beyond this. In today’s Experience Economy, education is no longer just about grades—parents and students seek immersive, personalized, and transformational learning experiences. Schools that focus only on exam results will struggle to stand out. A New Approach to School Marketing: ✅ Service-Oriented Education – Highlight career guidance, mentorship, and leadership programs. ✅ Experiential Learning – Showcase hands-on projects, real-world applications, and digital learning tools. ✅ Transformational Education – Position learning as a life-changing journey that fosters personal growth, leadership, and purpose. Why This Matters 🔹 Shift from product-centric to experience-driven messaging 🔹 Use storytelling and student success stories to engage audiences 🔹 Build purpose-driven enrollment campaigns that focus on impact The future belongs to schools that move beyond “Apply Now” and market the experience, the journey, and the transformation.

🎓 Are We Preparing Our Business Students for the Future? In the face of technological disruptions and emerging digital competitors, it’s time for business schools to rethink their approach to education. Are we equipping our students with the right tools to navigate the dynamic 21st-century landscape? The answer is it depends on the type of #cognitiveknowledge students acquire. The MECCDAL Model, a holistic and execution-oriented framework integrates five distinct types of cognitive knowledge into our curriculum: 1️⃣ Conventional Knowledge: Enhance understanding and retention by using interactive online platforms to teach foundational marketing concepts. 2️⃣ Patchwork Knowledge: Foster a culture of innovation and creativity by organizing interdisciplinary hackathons where students from different fields come together to solve marketing challenges. 3️⃣ Practical Knowledge: Make the application of theoretical knowledge more engaging and memorable by using AR or VR to simulate real-world marketing scenarios. 4️⃣ Subversive Knowledge: Prepare students to adapt to disruptive trends in the marketing industry by encouraging them to create marketing campaigns for hypothetical products that challenge traditional marketing paradigms. 5️⃣ Mundane Knowledge: Make learning about routine business operations more engaging and enjoyable through gamification techniques. By integrating these components into our curriculum, we can help students forge a comprehensive, innovative, and practical reasoning methodology that amplifies problem-solving capabilities. It’s time for business schools to evolve, embrace holistic learning, and prioritize execution skills. 🌐 Join the Movement: If you’re passionate about transforming business education, consider joining the Global Alliance for Transforming Business Education (GATBE). Is Traditional Higher Education Still Relevant? Of Course, It Is! Let’s Reimagine the Narrative. As we enter 2025, the value of traditional higher education continues to be a topic of intense debate. With the rise of alternative learning pathways, skills-focused certifications, and AI-powered tools reshaping the workforce, many are questioning if a college degree is worth the investment. But here’s the thing: Higher education’s relevance isn’t just about the job market. It’s about the holistic growth of individuals—critical thinking, cultural literacy, and the ability to adapt to a changing world. The challenge isn’t whether higher education matters but how we communicate and deliver that value in today’s rapidly evolving market. This is where product management can play a transformative role. By viewing academic programs as products, we can approach higher education with a user-centric mindset. 🎓 Who is the learner? What are their goals, pain points, and motivations? 📈 What are the outcomes? Are we preparing students not just for their first job but for lifelong learning? 💻 How do we innovate? Are we leveraging technology and flexible delivery models to meet learners where they are? Product management allows us to reimagine the journey—from admissions to graduation and beyond. It encourages institutions to be proactive, adaptive, and empathetic to the needs of today’s learners while maintaining the transformative essence of higher education. Let’s stop asking whether higher ed is still relevant and instead focus on how we can elevate its value, together. #HigherEducation #ProductManagement #Innovation #LifelongLearning

Life after a refreshing 4-day break! 🌞 As an educator, I believe breaks are essential for students to recharge and refocus. In today's fast-paced digital landscape, it's easy to get burned out. Taking time off allows students to step away, relax, and come back with new ideas and perspectives. However, attending classes with discipline is equally crucial, especially in Digital Marketing. The field is constantly evolving, and staying up-to-date with the latest trends and tools is vital. By attending classes regularly and being engaged, students can gain a competitive edge and achieve their goals. Looking forward to seeing my students tomorrow, ready to dive back into the world of digital marketing with renewed energy and enthusiasm! 💻 #DigitalMarketing #BackToCampus #DisciplineMatters

Recently I gave a talk on the current disconnect of online higher education, highlighting that while we've made significant strides, we're yet to enter what I call "Phase 2" of online learning development. Since the mid-90s, we've adapted content from subject matter experts into courses that meet accreditation requirements. However, as we evolve, students are demanding more flexible and accessible learning options. They want shorter courses to accelerate their degrees or different formats to suit their learning styles. Despite progress in universal design and backward design methodologies, our course creation remains siloed, separating curriculum from the broader university experience. This disconnection affects hundreds of thousands of online students nationwide and globally, leading to a sense of isolation from their institutions. Online education often becomes a means to an end, fitting around personal commitments without fostering a strong institutional bond. As we look towards 2024 and beyond, we see students delaying education due to costs, uncertainty, or the diminishing necessity of degrees. Those who do enroll often experience a lack of engagement, merely completing courses online without meaningful interaction. This detachment translates to lower alumni involvement and support for their alma maters. To address this, we must rethink our approach. We need to design courses that integrate the institution's history and culture, emphasizing the unique value of learning from specific universities. Highlighting faculty expertise and research backgrounds can create a more immersive and connected learning experience. Moving forward, it's crucial to view universities as unified institutions, eliminating the divide between online and on-campus education. Our marketing should reflect the variety of delivery methods rather than emphasizing the distinction between online and traditional formats. I'll continue discussing these ideas throughout the year, but it's clear that fostering a cohesive university identity and culture in online education is essential for future success. #highereducation #onlinelearning #edtech #brandrecognition

In honor of my grad-iversary & to sprinkle a bit of encouragement on your feed, here are 7 things I’ve learned in 7 years since graduating Northeastern’s MBA program: 1. Change is Possible: If you have the desire & ability to make a change, do it. No matter how long its been between undergrad & your next adventure in higher-ed, the time will pass anyway, take the leap. 2. School Gives Language, Framework & Network: This is the true value of (non-technical) post-grad education. Meeting new, brilliant people wins every time. 3. The Real Work Happens At Work: Theory + practice? Can’t beat it. Also, remember to give yourself grace putting your new skills to work at work. 4. Don’t Toss Your Pre-Bschool Skills: I never thought my early-career experience in model management & casting would show up in brand management. Insert here leadership in casting for a current project & many other wonderfully nostalgic opportunities I’ve had to put the talent hat back on. What’s old always comes back in style. 5. Be Willing to Test & Learn: Not just as a marketing principle but also in company size, product category, brand vs agency, etc. The most well-rounded & dynamic marketers I know have a variety of experiences to pull from. 6. Curiosity is a Great Compass: I must admit, leading with curiosity is my natural bend. It’s what led me to business school & has helped keep me inquisitive. Learning doesn’t end when the digital textbooks close. 7. Nothing Tried, Nothing Gained: Whether it's an educational pursuit, switching to an industry you're passionate about, or the one risk that's coming to mind right now as you read this - take one step toward action, today. Happy back-to-school season!
