Is the private property sold to an owner who is not local? Is the land sold to develop more hotels? Do we lose the Missions? The city and the county face budget deficits and can't afford to buy the property, and school districts and other public revenue sources face shortfalls. For me, local ownership means taking care of residents whose leases will expire and taking on the financial risk of developing the blighted parcels of land that sit empty while keeping an affordable family experience in SA. As a community, we need more revenue to pay for programs for the most vulnerable throughout our city and to pay for the debt we've been taking on with increased general obligation bonds. Jay Hartzell and The University of Texas at Austin, this is our opportunity to lead by example. To showcase that sustainability isn't just about the environment, but about preserving our cultural heritage and learning from it. Let’s not forget, the very essence of UT is to change the world, and sometimes, that change begins at home. It's high time to truly practice what we preach.
