Union Terminal No. 1 Building, c. 1932    Built by Turner in 1932 for The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ), the Union Terminal No. 1 Building is one of the largest commercial buildings in New York City. Standing 15-stories tall with two basement levels, the Terminal Building boasts close to 3 million square feet of commercial space. Located at 111 Eighth Avenue, Abbott Merkt & Co. composed the full-block Art Deco building with a multipurpose design.    The first floor and basements were designated as "Union Inland Terminal No. 1" which was to be used to transport goods by truck to and from railroad lines and/or shipping piers. The second floor was the commerce section designed for exhibitions and the upper floors were designed for manufacturing. Connecting Minds at the University of Chicago’s David Rubenstein Forum The David Rubenstein Forum at the University of Chicago is a dynamic space designed to foster academic collaboration and community interaction. With its unique stacked structure, it offers both formal and informal meeting areas, centered around a social lounge.    Spanning 100,000 square feet across 10 stories, the forum features a unique post-tension design with non-typical floors, clad in zinc and glass for a 360-degree view of the surrounding Chicago area. American News Building, c.1924    Founded in 1864 by Sinclair Tousey, the American News Company (ANC) was a magazine, newspaper, book and comic book distribution company. After a lengthy anti-trust battle, ANC shut its doors in 1957. However, its impressive headquarters at 131 Varick Street still remains.    Designed by Russell G. & Walter M. Cory Architects (who also designed the Starrett-Lehigh Building), ANC’s headquarters was completed by Turner in 1924 for $800,000. The building’s current anchor tenant is Manhattan Mini Storage.    Situated on a 150’ by 175’ lot at the corner of Varick & Spring Streets, the 12-story building was constructed of reinforced concrete and features a 2-story base with ornamental arched windows. The Rebirth of a Newark Landmark: Hahne & Co. Redevelopment Project Once a bustling department store in 1901, Hahne & Co. is now a symbol of Newark's vibrant revival. The redevelopment project transformed this historic landmark into a mixed-use marvel.    The project, totaling 510,000 sq. ft., features a 9-story, 110,000 sq. ft. residential tower and 400,000 sq. ft. of historic renovations, and is outfitted with 160 apartments, retail spaces, and a community arts space for Rutgers University. James Madison High School, c.1924 The school was named after President James Madison because of Madison’s strongly held belief that “…people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives”. When it opened to students in 1925, the high school consisted of two red brick buildings, one standing three stories tall and the other five. The project was designed and conceived by William H. Gompert, Architect/School Superintendent, to address school overcrowding due to a surge in Brooklyn’s population. During his five years as School Superintendent, Gompert would design more than 170 schools! Among James Madison High School many accolades, the school is one of only a handful of high schools worldwide to have educated five or more #NobelLaureates.
