#GroundsWeek, now in its fourth year, looks to raise awareness and recognise the work of grounds care volunteers and professionals in the UK, with a focus on inspiring new recruits to consider a career in the industry. Research carried out by the GMA, highlights that the industry is in need of new recruits to join the sector. Currently, 40% of the workforce is over 50 years-old and, without an influx of new recruits, this could result in a significant employment gap within 5 years. Sport simply could not take place without the contribution of grounds management and, without quality grass pitches, not only will our nation’s health and local communities suffer, but so will our talent offering when it comes to professional teams and leagues. We know that, if we improved existing grass pitches, almost 1,400,000 (1,376,252) more children could play rugby or football every week and 489,859 more could play cricket every season. That means 4,000,000 more children’s football matches could happen every year on existing pitches – this is why #GroundsWeek and encouraging more people to join the sector is so important. Activity and events taking place over the week are all aimed at introducing new people to the industry and improving the provision of grass pitches, so keep an eye on the #GroundsWeek webpage for information about the events when they’re announced. If you have any questions regarding #GroundsWeek and how you can get involved, please get in touch with us at communications@thegma.org.uk. Lessons from the Non-League. How do you transform a football club off the field in just 18 months? Club Director Harry Hugo is making big changes at Farnham Town Football Club. "It's a business, rather than just a football club... we are trying to build an entertainment brand that plays football twice a week." 🏟️ Infrastructure changes, such as the position of the filming gantry, the orientation of stands and viewing areas and additional supporter-focused amenities such as the Mystery Kitchen. 💵 Incremental fan spending targets on merchandise, food and drinks help to increase the revenues needed to make a sustainable football club. 🖥️ Placing high importance on social media to drive whole week-long engagement and interest. Non-competitive Sports Day. Yesterday I spent the day at my boys' School for 'Sports Day'. It was, as it has been for the last few years', non-competitive. I can't help but wonder what the effects will be on a generation of children participating in things like non-competitive Sports Days . As a Finance and Leadership Recruiter I think that resilience is key both in the roles I recruit for and in Recruitment itself. I also think competitive sports can play a key role in building resilience. Is it just me or do we need to stop things like non-competitive Sports Days and participation awards? #sportsday #resilience #children

Last night was our "Champion's Club" event for Sport Central. I have been on the Board of SC for, I don't know, 8 years or so and sitting my likely last term. The event was a Q & A with Mattias Ekholm and his wife Ida Bjornstad. Dare I say Ida stole the show with passionate commentary about the power of sport in society. Her two asks: 1) we keep sport affordable and 2) we keep sport fun. I think about these two things often. I think about the "spiraling up" of youth sport; the camps, private coaching, etc... and how that impacts the desire to be involved of athletes who that is not in the cards for. I don't have a solution, but I think of "inclusivity" and of all the things that may make people feel excluded - whether it be the matching tracksuits for a few hundred bucks or the feeling you are being left behind because you cannot partake in the "extracurriculars" the rest of the team does. I also think about the bias to "high performance" as the goal of sport; I certainly have that. But much of the value of sport can be found at all levels. Organizations, teams and such need to find pathways to keep kids involved and bonus points if they don't feel like a failure to go on that diverging stream. Finally, to see Mattias and Ida, I am reminded how great having a true partner as, well, a partner is. If you want to be part of the mission: "“Building better people is the goal, sport is the vehicle." then see below! https://lnkd.in/gUPrbN2N

I really enjoyed working on this document. 🖥 Researching different #withoutwaste initiatives, understanding the differences between the Balkans and Scandinavian countries when it comes to sustainable sport events, and checking my home country Turkey's current policies on waste management has been a good learning process. 🖊 In this document, you will find inspiring examples from the Balkan region, Oslo, Copenhagen, and even Japan. Do not think that they wouldn't work in your city. 💡 You never know where inspiration is hiding, and it is helpful to share well-functioning and sustainable good practices when contacting local authorities and stakeholders around your town. #sportwithoutwaste - BGBA ISCA - International Sport and Culture Association
Hot of the press 🔛 The newest 🎯 Sport #WithoutWaste resource, intended to inspire local authorities, municipalities, local communities and grassroots sport organisations and facilitate the efforts to create sustainable events. ♻ The recommendations aim to help communities get started. We know that it’s unrealistic to go all the way from day one, but every step counts and hopefully the recommendations provided will make it easier to prioritise.
