Happy Veterans Day! My mission as an educator and social entrepreneur revolves around preserving, protecting, and promoting authentic Black history, showcasing the exemplary contributions of Black Americans to the United States and the world. On this Veterans Day, I take the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the Black American men and women who served in the United States armed forces. As highlighted by Black historian Dr. L. D. Reddick, it is intriguing that at the onset of every major U.S. war, Blacks were initially not sought for combat. However, as the wars progressed, they were inevitably called upon to contribute to achieving victory. It's equally intriguing to note that the moral justifications America fought for were often denied to Black Americans on the home front. Despite fighting abroad for freedom, democracy, and justice, they faced denial of these very ideals in their own country. Today, as we honor Veterans Day, we specifically celebrate the Black American soldiers who, despite being denied the opportunity to fully embrace their American identity, practiced and understood the efficacy of American ideals, beliefs, and values. Women’s History Month: Honoring Native American Women Veterans During Women’s History Month 2024, VA Office of Women’s Health is honoring Native American women Veterans. VA recognizes the impact your advocacy, contributions and sacrifices have made on our military history. Native American women Veterans have had an exemplary tradition of military service for over 200 years, overcoming adversity and serving at a higher rate compared to any other demographic, demonstrating dedication to our country and everlasting commitment to service. Today, women make up 11.3% of the Native American Veteran population (about 20,000), which is a higher percentage than women in all other demographics. https://lnkd.in/gJ4SGFbf

In recognition of their contributions and to enrich our collective history, we must take steps to preserve these diverse stories. Black veterans have played a significant role in shaping the trajectory of American history since the nation's inception. Their contributions have been profound and multifaceted, influencing military campaigns, civil rights movements, and societal progress. Understanding the historical numbers of Black soldiers provides a glimpse into the magnitude of their impact. The legacy of Black veterans continued to evolve throughout the 20th century after serving in both the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War. In World War I, over 350,000 Black soldiers served in segregated units, demonstrating valor and resilience in the face of adversity. World War II marked another significant milestone, as over 1.2 million Black soldiers served in various capacities, including the famed Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st Tank Battalion. Their contributions helped secure victory overseas and fueled the momentum for civil rights back home. Today, Black veterans serve honorably in the armed forces, contributing to the nation's defense while advocating for equality and justice. National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15 to honor and celebrate the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have contributed so much to our nation’s history, culture and achievements. We recognize that the Army and USACE stories cannot be told without acknowledging the remarkable service and sacrifices made by Hispanic and Latino American Soldiers and civilians. This year’s national theme, “Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America,” captures the spirit and contributions of generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have served and continue to serve the nation in all walks of life. Hispanic and Latino Americans have shaped and enhanced our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multi-ethnic and multicultural customs of their communities. They make up 17% of America’s Soldiers and 7% of Army Civilians.
