“Amusement Casino” in Japan
If you take a stroll around downtown Osaka, you may notice what look like small scale casinos scattered around the city.
With images of poker chips, roulette wheels and various other table games covering the windows and on signs, it looks like gambling is going on inside.
But while the regulatory landscape is slowly shifting in Japan with the introduction of IR casino slated for later this decade, most gambling including casinos is still illegal.
Amusement casino are a peculiar middle ground – occupying a space between game centers, ubiquitous entertainment halls like pachinko/pachislot, and traditional casino.
Players pay an entrance fee that goes towards playing chips and sometimes food and drink.
Table games are offered, tournaments are held and the lucky players that win can in many cases save their chips to use for play on another day, or in some case exchange for food/drink.
While many Amusement casino offer a variety of games similar to what could be found in regular casino, poker is becoming a popular game of choice.
Poker tournament tours are becoming more common events domestically, and some amusement casinos offer players the chance to win entry into these events.
There are now hundreds of these venues across the country, and it is interesting that the proliferation really started to kick off in the wake of the introduction of the IR Casino bill in 2018.
Finding unique ways to enjoy games of chance has always been out of necessity for the Japanese, and it will be interesting to see how these entrepreneurial ventures evolve and change the landscape of entertainment in Japan.
