Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures out there! At Turning Point Community Services, we recognize the vital role fathers and father figures play in shaping strong, resilient families. Today, as we celebrate fatherhood, let's raise awareness about the unique challenges many fathers face, including homelessness and housing instability. Did you know that family homelessness is a significant and growing issue in the U.S. with families comprising 30-50% of the homeless population? While many of these families are headed by single mothers, we understand that many take on the roles and responsibilities of both parents. Together, we can ensure every parent has the opportunity to create a brighter future for their children. #FathersDay #SupportFamilies #EndHomelessness #TurningPointCommunityServices #FamilyStrength #TPCS [Sources: National Alliance to End Homelessness, Family Gateway]

My Crash Course in the Realities of Homelessness We often think we understand homelessness, but some stories reveal just how complex and heartbreaking it really is. I'm trying to help a single mother of three special needs children, including one with level 2 autism, trapped in what looks like an impossible situation: • Homeless after her husband's incarceration • Unable to work without childcare • Can't enroll kids in school without an address • Assistance programs on hold due to frequent moves Her struggle exposes critical gaps in our social safety net and challenges our assumptions about homelessness. This is more than finding shelter for this family. It's about breaking a vicious cycle that often tears families apart and perpetuates the generational cycle of poverty. Read the full story via the link below. What can we do as a community to better support our most vulnerable families? Share your thoughts below. #Homelessness #SpecialNeeds #SocialJustice #CommunitySupport

🫣 Family homelessness is real, even if we don’t always see it. 👀 Homelessness in our community is more complex than a single number can show. HUD’s definition of homelessness counts those in shelters or on the streets, while the McKinney-Vento definition used in schools includes families and children who may be doubled up or staying temporarily with others. Both views are essential in beginning to understand the true scope of the crisis—because homelessness affects individuals and families differently, requiring a unique approach to support all community members without a stable home. Families facing homelessness need tailored support and specific resources, especially when it comes to finding housing and overcoming employment, childcare, and transportation barriers. By recognizing both key definitions of homelessness and building a collaborative network of community organizations, schools, and service providers, we can create a safety net that meets each family and individual’s needs. Family Promise of Greater Wichita is committed to bridging these gaps and working together with our incredible community partners to create lasting solutions. 💛 https://lnkd.in/eqPpb5wc #FamilyPromiseWeek #HomelessnessAwareness #FamilyHomelessness #InvisibleCrisis #KeepingOurPromise #GrowingTogether #TogetherWeCan #CommunityCollaboration

Today, on World Homelessness Day, we focus on the reality that 16-24-year-olds now make up nearly one in five of those assessed as homeless or at risk of homelessness. This year alone, the number of young people facing homelessness has risen by 6.6%, reaching nearly 59,000. These aren’t just numbers—they represent young lives deeply impacted by housing insecurity, anxiety, and mental health struggles. At YMCA Robin Hood, we work tirelessly to provide vulnerable young people with the resources they need to build stable, independent futures. By offering shelter, education, and support, we’re striving to break the cycle of youth homelessness and create lasting change As we gear up for the Big Newark Sleep Out on 7 March 2025, we invite local businesses and teams to join us. Together, we can make a lasting impact by raising awareness and commit to creating brighter futures for vulnerable young people. When my daughter was 13, her best friend started sleeping over and one day asked if she could stay permanently. We found her a bed and welcomed her into our family without any legal involvement. I never considered her a homeless person. But according to the Youth Success Project, when she first started staying with us, she was. I attended an informational presentation on Youth and Young Adult Homelessness in New Hampshire presented by the Youth Success Project. The Youth Success Project is run by youths with lived experience on homelessness. They are collectively working to change the definitions of and awareness of unaccompanied homeless youth under age 25. They bring their voices to a critical problem for youth that is severely unrecognized and want to change how we view homelessness. Because all systems here in New Hampshire (HUD, DHHS, etc) all have differing definitions and requirements for homelessness, it often goes underreported. According to the Chaplin Hall Study of 2017: ❗️1 in 10 youths ages 18-25 faces some form of homelessness in a single year in New Hampshire! The Youth Success Project presents the results of the New Hampshire Youth Count of 2022 with the following diagram of important statistics to be aware of. I would like to commend these young people who are courageously and valiantly sharing their lived experiences to change the dialogue around this critical issue. #youthhomelessness #advocacy #homelessness Link provided for more information: https://lnkd.in/eMBk-Ypg

Stereotypes surrounding homelessness often overshadow the diverse and complex realities faced by individuals and families. The stories of James and Judette remind us that no one is immune to homelessness, and many, like them, face this challenge with resilience, compassion, and transformative strength. After losing their baby son in 2018, James Eliscar and his wife almost became homeless due to overwhelming medical and funeral bills. This heartbreaking event inspired James to start a housing clinic for those facing eviction or foreclosure. What began as a community-driven initiative has evolved into Sarepta's housing pillar, empowering marginalized neighbors like Judette. After multiple evictions following her husband's sudden death, Judette found herself experiencing homelessness. Through legal aid and financial literacy workshops, Sarepta equips individuals like her to pursue homeownership and financial stability. Sarepta Women and Children Empowerment Center, one of our Community Action Grant winners, aims not only to address immediate needs but also systemic issues around housing insecurity. Join us in breaking stereotypes about homelessness and fostering a more empathetic society where every person's story is valued and respected. Homelessness is a complex issue that affects communities worldwide. However, with compassion, collaboration, and innovative approaches, we can work towards positive outcomes for those experiencing homelessness. Many individuals experiencing homelessness have experienced trauma in their lives, which can exacerbate their challenges and barriers to stability. Adopting trauma-informed approaches that prioritise safety, trust, and empowerment can help create supportive environments where individuals feel valued and respected. Together, we can work towards creating a future where everyone has a place to call home and the support they need to thrive. Let's continue to strive for compassion, understanding, and action in our efforts to end homelessness. #Homelessness #CommunitySupport #EndHomelessness #SocialJustice #CommunityDevelopment 🏡🤝💙
