Hitachi Rail’s efforts to improve battery packs for trains   The project, implemented in the UK, is aimed to develop LiFePO4 battery that is 40% smaller and 22% lighter.   Such batteries are important for low-floor trains because the undercar space where these power sources are located is limited. Hitachi Rail also expects that reducing the weight of batteries would lead to a reduction in the weight of rolling stock, making maintenance and refurbishment easier.   The €1.7 mln R&D will involve UK research centres and battery supplier Turntide Technologies. The project is part-funded by Innovate UK.   Hitachi Rail is not giving a timeframe for the project, but the batteries could be in demand now. For example, a five-car Class 802 hybrid train powered by batteries and diesel fuel is being tested in the country.   LiFePO4 batteries are distinguished from other lithium-ion batteries by their longer service life, faster charging and other advantages. 1000+ buses to be built by Wrightbus (Ballymena, Northern Ireland) for UK’s The Go-Ahead Group bus operator. Looking at the press releases: WrightBus – “more than 1000 buses”, “more than 90% of the order will be zero-emission”; Go-Ahead – “up to 1,200 new zero emission buses”. Turning to the article carried by routeone Magazine at https://lnkd.in/eKFt-8XT : “43 of the vehicles will be hydrogen fuel cell-electric examples for Metrobus but the remainder will predominantly be battery-electrics that are spread across various group operations”. Great to see this electrification of a large bus fleet, but one question: why bother with 43 hydrogen fuel-cell buses when the Go-Ahead commitment is clearly to battery electric vehicles?

An order for six more hydrogen-powered passenger trainsets has been received by Stadler Rail from California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans). This order is worth $127m and it will be hugely beneficial to the growth of the hydrogen transport industry. The design of the trains is based on Stadler’s Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train (FLIRT) concept and Caltrans has stated that this design makes the train more efficient. It is this design that makes it more efficient as, the train is lighter as well as more affordable in comparison to other locomotive-hauled coaches, which are designed in a more traditional way.
