It’s true that many companies have become quite demanding when hiring for UI artist roles, expecting a wide range of skills across various tools and fields. It can feel overwhelming, especially when the focus seems to shift more toward being a jack-of-all-trades rather than honing a specific expertise. This trend often reflects the fast-paced nature of the industry and the desire for versatile team members. However, it can lead to unrealistic expectations for candidates. What are your thoughts on how to navigate this landscape?

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠? 𝐃𝐨 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞? Luke Ylias asked some very relevant questions in response to my post below which I think warrant a real answer. My take (keeping in mind I'm not a Designer): between Game and Product UI/UX Design, there are clear similarities in processes used: research, synthesis, concept, develop, deploy etc. are universal, each involving nominally similar tasks. But there are fundamental differences in purpose, execution, impact and perceived value, which, in practice, make it difficult to transition from Design for Product to Design for Games. Several reasons why: - 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬/𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 #productdesign generally measures success in commercial metrics: user acquisition/conversion/retention, revenue generated, business processes optimized, friction reduced, efficiency, etc. #uiuxdesign for games aims to immerse the user, provide contextual information in support of game or combat mechanics, narrative ambitions, etc. and orchestrate friction in such a way that it provides a ‘fair’ challenge. I suppose you could say that success in this respect centers on 'emotional' metrics. - 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 Research for Product Design identifies opportunities to reduce user pain points/friction, extend the feature set, maximize KPI's and so on In UI/UX for Games, user research informs and influences gameplay/combat mechanics, 3C and level design, game balancing and more - 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Visual treatment in design for Product generally involves language systems that adhere to brand or style guides, and aim to inform users effectively, with clarity and consistency. Assets are typically vector based. In Games, overall visual treatment is subject to the genre and art direction of the game, and is intended to enhance the player experience. Assets required can vary wildly, and are typically (digitally) hand painted. - 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 Product UI/UX Design frequently involves questions of cross-compatibility (browser, Windows/Mac, Android/iOS), n-tier architecture, database/back end integration, etc. Game UI/UX Design considers topics such as performance/latency, controller/input features and mapping, memory usage, engine integration, accessibility, and more Overall, this means that, for UI/UX vacancies that focus on in-game work, we almost exclusively look for candidates whose past experience and portfolio showcase direct familiarity with the type of challenges we're tackling. I recognize that may sound disappointing, but do keep in mind: of course there are also 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 areas in the games industry where Product Designers are needed 🙂 #gamejobs

Fast-rising designer with a talent for creating impactful and profitable user experiences.|Open to relocation offers
Your Design Journey is Your Best Portfolio When I first started as a UI/UX designer, I was so attached to my work that I hesitated to post it on social media. I felt it wasn’t “good enough.” But one thing I didn’t realize back then is that your design journey matters just as much as the final product. Funny enough, I landed my first job because someone had been following my design journey. They saw my growth, not just my finished designs, and that was enough to give me the opportunity I needed. Recently, I came across a job referral where the requirement was a Twitter portfolio to track your activity—another reminder that people are watching your progress even when you don’t know it! So, to fellow designers, don’t hold back. Share your work, embrace feedback, and let people see where you’re headed. You never know who’s watching and what opportunities might come your way. ————————————————————— For those meeting me for the first time, I’m Tolulope Ajewole, a UI/UX designer with nearly 2 years of experience. I’m open to helping your startup bring its dream to life! 📸I saw the video from one of my random Interaction practice

UI/UX Designer at AtoZeeSolutions | Top UX Research Voice | LinkedIn Creator | Open For Collaboration
Companies, Stop Demanding Superheroes. Companies, it's time for a reality check. Recent job postings, like the one demanding a UI/UX designer with expertise in graphic design, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and video editing, are unrealistic. While a broad skill set is beneficial, expecting mastery in every area is counterproductive. We struggle to find top-tier UI/UX designers because we're still treating the role like a catch-all for creative tasks. Let's focus on hiring specialists who excel in their core competencies. We can build stronger teams and create better products by valuing and recognizing specific skills. It's time to shift our mindset. Let's hire smart by setting realistic job expectations. #StopExpectingSuperhumans #UIUXDesign #DesignSpecialization #HiringBestPractices #RealisticJobExpectations #JobMarketRealities

UI Engineer| UI/UX Designer | Experienced Front-end developer | Transforming ideas into high-functioning websites and Apps that generate revenue. My web design agency - growthlobby.co .
A letter to designers from Developers😎 Dear UI/UX Designers, We, the developers, have a bone to pick with you all. First off, we love the new design – it's clean, it's modern, but it's... impossible to code😭. Like Seriously, did you use a random color generator for the palette? We've seen less complexity in a Rubik's Cube. And those curves on the buttons – are they meant to hypnotize us? Because they're working. We've been staring at them for hours trying to figure out the CSS. Also, a quick question: Do the hover effects come with a manual? We're thinking of hiring a magician to help us implement them. Seems like the only logical solution at this point. In all seriousness, your work is as beautiful as it is unfeasible. Keep it up, and we'll keep Googling "how to turn a PSD into a working website without losing our minds." Looking forward to the next challenge you throw our way! Best, The Devs Who Now Dream in Hex Code.

⚡ SENIOR/LEAD UI DESIGNERS NEEDED! £70-95K ⚡ We have 3 separate positions all requiring strong UI designers (or Product Designers who lean more towards the UI side). Clients include a challenger bank, a FinTech and a sustainable energy start-up. ✨ 🎨 Looking for quite a unique style of portfolio in each case, so if we’ve spoken recently but I’ve not briefed you on one of these already it’s probably linked to some specific style or project work that I think might be lacking – but feel free to give me a nudge anyway. All require between 1-3 days in a London office, depending on the specific job. 🏢 Looking for portfolios which showcase a really strong visual impact and evidently more UI-focussed than UX. Need to showcase creativity and craft (I know this is subjective most of the time, so don’t be offended if I don’t think you’re right for these particular clients, this time around). Really need to see your own individual style and innovation where possible i.e. not just a block of various design systems. Sponsorship is not being offered, sorry. 👀 Please send through your CV and portfolio if interested; ngrantham@zebrapeople.com 👈 #productdesign #uidesign #uidesigner #ui

Senior UX Designer | Crafting Intuitive & Engaging User Experiences | Open to Immediate Opportunities
Isn't it time we redefined expectations for UI/UX designers? After investing time and effort in the interview process, being asked to demonstrate JavaScript skills—when it's not part of the original job description—feels like moving the goalposts. As a UI/UX designer, my expertise lies in understanding user needs, creating intuitive interfaces, and ensuring a seamless user experience. While I value collaboration with developers and appreciate the role of code, expecting deep JavaScript knowledge seems to blur the lines between roles. Let’s respect the specialization within our fields and value the unique strengths each of us brings to the table. Clearer communication and defined expectations would go a long way in ensuring a smoother hiring process for everyone involved. #UIUXDesign #HiringProcess #JobExpectations #DesignThinking
