PROMOTION, FROM WITHIN.   Most management complains about the lack of able people and goes outside to fill key positions. Nonsense. Nobody inside an organization ever looked ready to move into a bigger job.   Use the rule of 50 percent. Try to find somebody inside the company with a record of success (in any area) and an appetite for the job. If he looks like 50 percent of what you need, give him the job. In six months, he'll have grown the other 50 percent, and everybody will be satisfied.   How to do it wrong: Go outside and get some expensive guy who looks like 110 percent of what you want, and a year later, after having raised salaries around him, you'll still be teaching him the business. The people around him will be frustrated and ineffective.   One of the keys is to pick someone within the company who has a well-deserved reputation as a winner. Not, someone who looks to you like a potential winner but doesn't happen to fit in very well where he is. #leadership #management #corporate

Steve Jobs' approach to #hiring is something that truly inspires me. Being in the search business for over 14 years, I've learned about multiple retention issues faced by employers, and one of the core reasons behind the poor retention of some exceptional talent was not welcoming their innovative ideas to bring a change. I'm just wondering, why would you hire the expert for? What's the purpose of the experience requirement if you don't want to benefit from their unique experience which could potentially be impactful? Although this has changed recently, I truly believe that welcoming initiatives and ideas from people you hire is one of the best approaches to retention and overall company growth. #leadership #retention #growthmindset
