When people ask me what's it like in #Davos during the WEF Annual Meeting, I often compare it to Epcot Center at Disney World in Florida. For those who haven't been, Epcot is a theme park that features country-hosted pavilions, creating a "permanent world's fair" dedicated to celebrating human achievement, technological innovation and international culture. While there is less snow in Florida, we can expect a similar vibe in Davos during next week's #wef24, where a "world leader's fair" will feature country-hosted convenings, corporate-sponsored sessions and experiential networking events (aka parties). Check out the below map created by one local service provider to understand the "lounges" of the land. The good news is that this "Davos fringe" has grown in sophistication and purpose in recent years, with greater focus on smaller, intentional engagements that are more likely to lead to action and follow-up. Great insights from my colleague Wu Yulin, Business Development Director for China at The Trade Desk, on how Chinese companies are strategically using major sporting events to expand their global reach, with the upcoming Olympics being a prime example. Yulin points out that even though there are vast differences between China and overseas markets in culture, religion, regulations, and consumer habits, sports have a unique ability to bridge these gaps and capture the attention of audiences worldwide. This global reach makes major sporting events a valuable platform for Chinese brands to connect with a global audience. This is especially true considering our research shows that 20% of sports fans following the Paris event plan to watch through streaming or video-on-demand services, which is double the previous event's number. Chinese brands have long recognised this potential. In 2004, Lenovo became the first mainland Chinese company to be a top Olympics sponsor. This trend continued with Hisense Group becoming the first Chinese top sponsor of the European Cup in 2016. In recent years, we have seen a surge in Chinese brands like TCL, Huawei, vivo, and BYD participating in major sporting events.
