This document is a deep dive into Bicycle Collective's impact, programming, people, and finances for the past year. Producing the report is always a challenging yet gratifying process, because it allows our staff time to reflect back on the impact we have made in the communities we serve, the programming we have delivered, the bikes we have received as donations, and the smiles we have delivered to those most in need of a bicycle to help them get to work, school, or just get outside for a little exercise. Although the document looks back at the preceding year, it also helps us fine tune our focus on the future. What can we say about 2023 that hasn’t already been said? It was a big year of realizing long term dreams and goals, especially when we rolled open the doors in late November of our New Hub on 325 West and 900 South in Salt Lake City. As an organization, we still managed to maintain our measurable impacts across the state. No boring stuff in this report. We need to see more VCs thinking ahead and addressing critical issues before crises occur. True vision is demonstrated by showcasing the impact of portfolio companies during times of crisis. At OpalAi, we were awarded funding from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration SBIR for AI-enabled wildfire prevention system, validating the potential of our technology to tackle this pressing challenge. However, despite this recognition and progress, raising funds from institutional investors has been nearly impossible. The reason? Most VCs and investors still prioritize profitability over meaningful impact. This highlights a deeper systemic issue: when profit consistently takes precedence, solving urgent problems like environmental preservation becomes almost unattainable. It’s time to rethink our priorities. Real progress happens when long-term impact takes precedence over short-term gains. Let’s work together to build a future where innovation and sustainability drive meaningful change. 🩸 Donated Blood – And Learned Something Cool! 🩸Stephanie Edra thank you for organizing this event! I had the privilege of donating blood in partnership with Stanford Blood Center at the Hyatt Centric. Not only was it an important experience, but I also learned something fascinating that I wanted to share. Turns out, my blood type is O-, and apparently, that makes me a universal donor! 🩸🔄 It’s pretty rare, though, which means it can sometimes be harder to find donors with compatible blood. So, of course, I couldn’t help but ask: Do they save O- blood for other O- people? 🤔 Her answer blew my mind: Nope! O- blood is actually used in emergency situations, especially when babies are born and their blood type isn't yet known, or in trauma cases when there's no time to check blood types. That O- blood is a lifesaver when every second counts. ⏱️ It’s incredible to know how something as simple as donating blood can make such a huge difference. Led by Owner & Foundation Board Chair Carrie Walton Penner and Owner & CEO Greg Penner, the Broncos today launched a statewide Riddell Axiom smart helmet distribution program covering all 277 high schools in Colorado. The initiative—donating more than 15,000 new helmets at no cost—marks the largest philanthropic investment in franchise history and is believed to be one of the largest in U.S. high school tackle football history. It would not be possible without the execution, creativity and collaboration led by VP of Community Impact Allie Engelken and Director of Youth & HS Football Bobby Mestas to bring the program to life over the last five months.

When I think about communities impacted by hurricanes, I think of coastal communities, like Houston with Hurricane Harvey in 2017 or New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Places like #ChimneyRock, North Carolina (pictured below) wouldn't have even been on my radar for being at risk for more than a bit of rain and wind. But, this week communities in and around Western North Carolina, like Chimney Rock, were devastated by unprecedented hurricane-inflicted damage by #HurricaneHelene. In some cases, entire communities washed away with flood waters. 🌊 According to an article by the #BBC, there is strong evidence to support the impact of #climatechange on the development, strength, speed, and duration of tropical storms. Warmer ocean waters facilitate stronger storms. Higher atmospheric temperatures support increased capacity of storms to hold more moisture. These phenomena collectively contribute to greater rainfall totals. Stronger storms can last longer after making landfall, allowing them to travel farther inland, and greater rainfall means a greater likelihood for extreme flooding. We saw this type of flooding happen farther inland with Hurricane Helene. 😕 The #UnitedNations' climate body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has noted a global temperature increase of just 1.5 degrees Celsius could mean 10% more tropical storms worldwide could reach category four or five. This means bigger, stronger storms that bring with them a higher likelihood of destruction, broader geographical impact, and greater risks to the health and safety of people living in the storms' path. 🌀 #climatechange is a global health emergency. Hurricane Helene is just one example of how extreme weather events, made more severe because of human-facilitated changes in the planet, impacts public health. 🚨 As impacts of climate change are more readily recognized as threats to public health, there is increased accountability for addressing it as such among public health agencies. Requirements for community resilience have been included in the #PHAB Standards and Measures for national accreditation and stronger emphasis on planning for climate-related emergencies in preparedness planning per #CDC #PHEP requirements are just two examples.
