England’s dramatic extra-time win against Slovakia in the last 16 round of Euro 2024 saw a peak audience of 18.4m tune into ITV's coverage across ITV1 and ITVX.   The figure was the highest TV audience on any channel in the UK in the last 18 months and ITV’s biggest since the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with the average for the game itself scoring 15.4m viewers and 66% of the available TV audience at the time. Interestingly, with 23.6m fans tuning into public-service broadcaster ZDF, Germany's 2-0 win over Denmark brought in less viewers than the tournament host's last group game against Switzerland and the opening game against Hungary. In Spain, the country's largest TV audience this year watched the national team’s 4-1 win over Georgia, with an average of 9.06m viewers tuning into RTVE's coverage. #SportsBiz #SportsMedia #Euro2024 #football #media

What is happening in football? It has become winner takes all. And the winner is the Premier League and by "all" we mean "America." For many in the US, the Premier league is world football. How far is the Premier League pulling ahead of rival European leagues? This far, says today's FT: "The Premier League has cracked the US. While its domestic rights may be faltering, England’s top division currently pulls in £1.8bn per season for overseas broadcast rights, including £333mn in the US. "This completely blows its European rivals out of the water, and is a key part of its £2bn per season advantage over its nearest rival in annual broadcast revenues. "Such a gulf explains why when Norwich City finished in last place in the 2021-22 Premier League, they earned more broadcast revenue for their league appearances than Bayern Munich, AC Milan or Paris St Germain, the German, Italian and French champions. "The Premier League’s pulling power is so great that across the whole of Europe only Barcelona and Real Madrid made more money from televised league games than England’s bottom-ranked team, with the result that the biggest clubs on the continent now increasingly find themselves outbid on transfers not only by fellow giants but also by Premier League minnows." #premierleague #tvrights #TV

#ManchesterUnited Plc (NYSE:MANU) on Wednesday slashed earnings guidance reflecting its exit from football's elite European competition and related reduction in broadcasting revenue. The Red Devils finished bottom of their Uefa Champions League group, and are sitting outside of Champions League qualification places at present.  United said that it now expects revenue to range from £635 million to £665 million in the year to 30 June, a drop from previous expectations of £650 million to £680 million. Guidance for adjusted EBITDA dropped from a range of £140 million to £165 million, to a range of £125 million to £150 million. In the quarter to September, the club reported a 9.3% increase in revenue to £157.1 million from a year ago, but a 1.3% drop in adjusted EBITDA to £23.3 million. Whither the FA Cup? Already under severe pressure due to schedule constraints and the rise and rise of the Premier League, Champions League and moving forward Club World Cup, the FA Cup remained relevant due being the tournament of the people because of its extended reach on the BBC and then ITV as well. Moving to TNT comes with great risk. A short term increase in rights fee may result is an accelerated decline. Leaving the TNT to distribute the FTA rights is also fraught with danger as they may end up buried on a TNT free to air service, a bit like the Champions League Final on You Tube (although the Final as a Listed Event must be offered to BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or 5). In my experience this approach never leads to an optimal solution. It would have been far safer for the FA to carve out a specific free to air package and remain in control of its own destiny. Why trust the potential long term future of your crown jewel to a broadcaster who very much sees the FA Cup as its third most important football property? How significant were key departures resulting in the FA taking its eye off the ball? I hope the FA does not come to regret this decision. https://lnkd.in/edmGG_5y
