#ThrowbackThursday or - when you randomly spot your paper in a YouTube Video 🌟🤣 2,5 years ago, I was deep into writing my master’s thesis and evaluating various battery technologies and battery production methods. Afterwards, we published the results in a paper. It's funny but also exciting to see it featured in a recent YouTube video by Sabine Hossenfelder and gaining some momentum once more. What's it all about >> In my thesis, I evaluated emerging technologies in the battery industry using the Hype Cycle framework introduced by Gartner. This overview maps 39 innovations in battery technology and production processes, including lithium-sulfur batteries, solid-state batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and production processes like dry coating. Given the rapid pace of innovation, the battery industry is one of the most dynamic sectors today. Stripping Back for Breakthroughs Imagine a traditional electrolyser – a tangle of components, each adding complexity and cost. We took a hard look and decided it was time for a change. Our supercritical electrolysis approach throws out the rulebook. No iridium, no membranes, no rare earth metals, no PFAS "forever chemicals," no bulky cooling stacks, and no need for gas compressors. This translates to a simpler, cheaper system with a significantly lower carbon footprint during manufacturing – more than half the carbon footprint of traditional electrolysers. We've designed a new electrolyser that doesn't just function – it thrives under optimal conditions. The sweet spot for efficient chemical reactions lies in the high-pressure, intermediate-temperature range. Existing electrolyser technology struggles in this zone, but our approach unlocks its full potential.
