📌 Converting Seawater into Fuel While the concept of converting seawater directly into fuel is intriguing. So, there are ongoing research and development efforts exploring the possibility of using seawater as a resource for fuel production. And they reached the NRL process.   The NRL process refers to the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) process, which is a method for converting seawater into fuel. It is a research project conducted by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory to explore the possibility of using seawater as a potential resource for fuel production. Here are details about the NRL process:   1. Electrolysis: The NRL process involves a two-step electrolysis method. First, seawater is subjected to electrolysis, where an electrical current is passed through the water. This electrolysis step separates the water molecules into hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen gas (O2).   2. Carbon Dioxide Extraction: In the second step, carbon dioxide (CO2) is extracted from the surrounding air or seawater. The extracted CO2 is then combined with the hydrogen gas obtained from the electrolysis process.   3. Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis: The resulting mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide is subjected to the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, a chemical process that converts the gases into liquid hydrocarbons. This synthesis process involves a series of reactions that produce a range of hydrocarbon products, including synthetic fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.   Quoted from this website (AIChE)   The navy have overcame this divisive argument by announcing that researchers, at the Naval Research Laboratory near Washington, have proven that in fact power engines can be powered with low-cost, safe abundant seawater.   Researchers have confirmed the results on April 2nd, with a simple experiment, they flew a model airplane powered by a two-stroke internal combustion engine using the fuel from seawater "This is the first-time technology of this nature has been demonstrated with the potential for transition, from the laboratory to full-scale commercial implementation," said Navy research chemist Heather Willauer in a news release. The breakthrough came after scientists developed a way to extract carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas from seawater, and then turned them into a fuel by a gas to liquids process with the help of a catalytic converter. #fuel_from_seawater #renewable_energy

To Fishcher-Tropsch or to Methanol-to-jet? That's the question many eSAF project developers are asking themselves right now. Hamburg University of Technology has recently performed a study comparing the two pathways to convert Hydrogen and captured CO2 into jetfuel. The main conclusion: Fisher tropsch has a better efficiency to produce a wide range of hydro-carbon products but MtK has a higher selectivity for Kerosine production and therefore a higher energy and carbon efficiency when only considering the Kerosine output. So which pathway should project developers choose? That all depends on the balance between the premium value for e-SAF and the by-products. Excited to share our latest research on ammonia (NH3) combustion kinetics! 🚀 📢 Sanket G. and co-authors conducted a comprehensive evaluation of 16 recent NH3 combustion kinetic models, utilizing vast amounts of available experimental data on NH3 and NH3/H2 mixtures. 🔬 This study provides valuable insights into the overall performance of these models, aiding users in selecting the most appropriate one for their needs. Additionally, we identified key kinetic parameters and explored their potential for model improvement. This work lays the groundwork for developing a consolidated model that integrates insights from various kinetic modeling approaches, as well as theoretical and experimental data. I am excited to share our latest research which delves into the potential of two alternative fuels, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and Dimethoxymethane (OME1), addressing the environmental impact of internal combustion engines. Using advanced numerical simulations, we've developed a compact reaction mechanism that accurately predicts combustion behavior. Our research, backed by both numerical and experimental data, supports the viability of HVO and OME1 blends in the quest for sustainable transportation. Adding just 30% OME1 to HVO noticeably reduces soot and NOx formation. “Carbon utilization can play an important role in the future net-zero emissions economy by providing a sustainable foundation for essential carbon-based products.” A new congressionally-mandated report from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reaches that conclusion. The report, “Carbon Utilization Infrastructure, Markets, and Research and Development,” explains that - while fossil fuels will largely be replaced by renewable or nuclear sources of energy - carbon-based products, such as aviation fuels, plastics and construction materials, will still need to be produced. The report cites studies of carbon mineralization in concrete, including CarbonCure’s carbon utilization solution. We welcome this validation of our technologies for lower carbon concrete, permanently mineralizing CO2 in the material, maintaining compressive strength, while also enabling reductions of carbon-intensive cement.
