❌ "The Stramp" never stood a chance. ❌ Located at #RobsonSquare in #Vancouver (my hometown), The Stramp is a perfect example of why we at AndHumanity, Inclusive Marketing Agency stress the importance of "Nothing About Us, Without Us" It may have made sense in theory, but in reality... #JEDI #EDI #InclusionMatters #InclusiveDesign #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs #UrbanPlanning #ArchitectureDesign #Architecture #Urbanism Source: @aboutherevideos on IG https://lnkd.in/g4_pnfbt

Pavement heave. Incorrectly planted and poorly maintained urban trees can cause pavement heave which ruins the value of infrastructure. But the risk of pavement heave can be eliminated using structural soil cells, which provides street trees with all the space they need to develop strong, healthy root systems, but in a directed and managed way. Even when the street trees are figs! Using our structural soil cells, the City of Newcastle, Australia, overcame these problems, creating an iconic avenue of figs in the civic center that coexists in perfect harmony with urban infrastructure. In less than 10 years, the figs on either side of the street have grown to meet in the middle, offering a cool, shady respite for residents, and visitors atop the civic park stairs and a fittingly picture-perfect entrance to the Newcastle Art Gallery. Shedding light on the CRE term "adaptive reuse," which refers to the process of repurposing buildings or structures for uses other than those originally intended. This practice involves modifying and updating existing buildings to serve new purposes, often to preserve cultural heritage, reduce environmental impact, or meet changing community needs. For example, converting an old factory into residential lofts or transforming a historic school into a museum are instances of adaptive reuse. This approach can be beneficial in urban planning and sustainable development, as it minimizes the need for new construction and reduces waste. #adaptivereuse #creterminology #leeandassociates

It's been easy to integrate my life as a home educator and my interest in politics and public service. For my homeschooling moms out there, here are a few wonderful points that can be taught from this event. These projects work well for parents whose children are in traditional school. Summer is long; keep them busy! 😉 Research Windom Road and the barrier that separated North Brentwood and Brentwood. Research the current mayor of Brentwood. Her election was a significant milestone. Ask your scholars to find out what that milestone is! Take a trip to the Windom Road Sculpture. Have your students reimagine how they would have turned the barrier into a sculpture. Who created this art piece? Look at other examples of their work. This project was funded by many organizations, one was the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. What is their role in our County? (hint.. it's super interesting and there are decisions being made at MNCPPC now that impact us for years to come.) Interview the Mayor of Brentwood or North Brentwood and find out what it took to collaborate and bring this project to life. These are just a few exciting things that can be done to enrich your scholars this summer!
Last weekend, our Municipalities Liaison, Doretea L. Burton, attended the Windom Road Historic Barrier Park unveiling in North Brentwood. During segregation, a physical barrier was erected to separate the towns of North Brentwood and Brentwood. Through partnerships with our County Government, M-NCPPC, the Neighborhood Design Center, and others, this barrier was replaced with a sculptural art installation and park. We want to congratulate Mayor Rocio Treminio-Lopez of Brentwood and Mayor Petrella Robinson of North Brentwood as well as their residents for their show of unity and perseverance in having this project completed. #PrinceGeorgesProud

Master of Science in Historic Preservation | Clemson University, 2024 Bachelor of Science in Anthropology | College of Charleston, 2021
What an interesting read! “Historic preservation brings the past into the present unlike any form of history. It helps us to consider what we can achieve in the future. It represents innovation. It represents social opportunity. It represents a lot of American values and ideals that haven’t been equally distributed, but then we can use these historic places to think about what’s next.” -Brent Leggs
Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund & Senior Vice President, National Trust for Historic Preservation
Partnerships have been vital to the success of the National Trust’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund since our launch in 2017. In this spirit, we’re grateful to have a creative and imaginative partner like #VerandaMagazine. October 2022, our team traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to meet with editor-in-chief, Steele Marcoux, and the Veranda team. We explored two Action Fund grantee sites, discussed the evolution of the preservation movement, and how the Action Fund is at the vanguard of this long overdue change. Together, we dreamed up the idea of an entire issue of Veranda Magazine dedicated to historic preservation. I’m proud to say that the dream has now been realized in their January/February issue, which focuses solely on the diverse works of historic preservation professionals, homeowners, artisans, and dreamers. I hope you’ll read more from Veranda: https://lnkd.in/eR9myPZQ National Trust for Historic Preservation

Historic buildings always remind me of how awesome we once were. ✨ I thrive in historic environments where we can connect with our past in a tangible way. ✨ Edited to add: What was once commonplace in a building that’s a 100+ is now extraordinary to observe and makes common sense to preserve. #womeninconstruction #JessPresForward #architecturaleyecandy #architecturalhistory #historicpreservation #savingplaces #thisplacematters

Today there is broad awareness that accelerating the preservation of Black historical sites is critical to telling the full story of America. What happened in the building is just as important as who built it/its architecture.

In the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America, a 10,763 squarefoot floating saltmarsh wetland has been installed. The installation is an extension of the National Aquarium and designed in part by Ayers Saint Gross. Functioning as a floating park during the day, visitors can educate themselves on the importance of wetlands and salt marshes. The site has already begun to attract mollusks, seabirds, and fish to it, which is a great indicator of its early success. The floating structure is home to over 30,000 grasses and shrubs, that once established, will spread and anchor themselves in the harbor. Once established and matured, the plants will act to aerate, clean, and filter the water, which in turn will attract more wildlife to the area, promoting a stonger and more resilient coastal biome. Projects and initiatives such as this, showcase the ability for us to be able to rebuild our ecosystems in places where the built environment has taken over. These types of projects are incredibly important to the long term sustainability of our environment. With this project as a role model, hopefully more coastal cities across the country will begin to implement the reintroduction of the natural environment into our built ones. We’re all in this together #sustainability #coastalresilience #saltmarsh #wetlands #protectthewetlands #coastal #design #architecture #conservation #urbandevelopment #urbanplanning #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #gardens
