Should an #innovation #projectplan include a separate #ethical work package? This is the question posed in an interesting article - posted on the TWI Orbit platform's Discussions forum - by Marianna Digka, Senior Innovation Specialist at TWI. In her post, Marianna discusses and explains how much emphasis you need to place on #ethics, some of the reasons why and what you can do about it, when submitting project proposals to European #funding programmes like #horizoneurope. Practically, you can begin with a self-assessment at the conceptual stage of the project to determine the level of ethics requirements. Consider the nature and scope of your #research - are there significant ethical concerns and/or potential risks to human rights, privacy or the #environment? If the answer is “yes”, then a dedicated work package may be necessary. However, not all proposals require a separate ethical work package or deliverable. 📣 RE4GREEN is mentioned in the CORDIS - EU research results 🍃 In the new publication of the Cordis Pack "Ethics and integrity: Building bridges for trust and excellence in research and innovation" RE4GREEN is mentioned as an example of the continuation of the European Commission's endeavour to fund projects that support researchers, research ethics committees, research integrity offices, policymakers and other relevant stakeholders. As stated in the report: "The responsible and ethical use of scientific discoveries and novel technologies requires that reflection on the impacts and potential misuse of new technological developments is incorporated into the research process." RE4GREEN will contribute to a research ethics and integrity framework in the European Research Area to facilitate the transition to a sustainable economy. 📢 Cordis results pack on ethics and integrity in R&I released! I’m happy to share the new publication Cordis Pack on #Ethics and #integrity: Building bridges for trust and excellence in #research and #innovation published by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) in cooperation with the European Commission's DG RTD. The publication presents the results of eight #HorizonEU and #H2020 Science with and for Society #SwafS funded projects that are aimed at rethinking research governance systems to ensure that scientific and technological progress goes hand in hand with our values. The projects illustrate how the EU is actively promoting the development of training, education and capacity-building regarding research integrity principles, and supporting initiatives that analyse the ethical dimensions and implications of emerging technologies. Coordinators of the eight featured EU-funded projects collaborated with the Publications Office of the European Union's team to present their results and/or outcomes to come. Thanks a lot to my colleague Roberta Monachello for leading this publication! Enjoy the reading! 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/eYTPG7t5

📢 We are thrilled to announce that TechEthosEU has been named one of the world’s leading ethical practices in the newest CORDIS Results Pack on ethics and integrity in research, released by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) in cooperation with the European Commission's DG RTD. 💡 This recognition highlights our commitment to ensuring that scientific and technological progress aligns with societal values and ethical standards. 🎯 The #H2020 TechEthos project aimed to provide guidance for the development and deployment of new and emerging #technologies. While emerging technologies often bring significant social, economic, and environmental benefits, their development and use can also raise substantial ethical concerns and questions. 🔎 To address these concerns, prioritising #ethics and societal values in the design, development, and deployment of new technologies is essential. The TechEthos project leveraged multi-stakeholder engagement and provided guidance on achieving this balance. 📌 For more details, read the full CORDIS Results Pack: https://lnkd.in/dcJXh3zg 👉 and discover the projects’ resources: https://lnkd.in/eyXrWP4D

Super excited that #CORDIS has named the TechEthosEU project one of the 'World-leading ethical practices'. Our team from AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Eva Buchinger, Michael Bernstein, Alexandra Csábi, Masafumi Nishi, Renata Mandzhieva and I were working on this project over the last years, together with a huge consortium of international partners. If you want to learn more about how to do #ethicsbydesign in the context of emerging technologies, check out the CORDIS publication here: https://lnkd.in/dAHEvKmJ 🚀 The EU-funded #TechEthos project highlights the importance of embedding ethics into emerging tech development. Covering climate engineering, digital extended reality technologies and neurotechnologies, we created methods for ethical considerations and wrote guidelines for safeguarding the development and mitigating potential risks. 👥 Community engagement is key! Through science cafes and interactive games, TechEthos involved over 700 citizens to gauge societal awareness and concerns. Findings emphasize the need for responsible implementation and oversight to build trust in new technologies. 🔗 Check out the TechEthos Anticipatory ethics Matrix (TEAeM) for a comprehensive framework guiding the ethical governance of emerging technologies. It's a crucial step toward integrating ethics in tech design, ensuring innovation benefits everyone while protecting societal values. #FutureTech #ResponsibleInnovation #EUResearch #Innovation #EthicsByDesign #TechForGood #CitizenScience #EthicalTech #PublicEngagement #SeriousGames

The latest CIOMS guidelines
The CIOMS report on 'International Guidelines on Good Governance Practice for Research Institutions (2023) is now out. The aim of the report is to help research institutions better fulfil their responsibilities in terms of protecting human research participants and their communities, involving and engaging them in the research processes, and guaranteeing the pertinence and quality of research while making the best use of available resources. Since the 1960s, numerous ethical, professional and industrial guiding documents were adopted to facilitate the increasingly complex research activities conducted with human participants globally. Many of these guidelines focus on individual researchers’ responsibilities to protect research participants while conducting good quality scientific studies. In practice, however, it is rarely assessed to what extent researchers are given the necessary resources for this purpose at their institutions. This report reviews the existing international standards and best practices in the field of health-related research, and offers research institutions detailed and specific guidance on how to implement them. #clinicaltrials #clinicalresearch #researchethics #researchanddevelopment #researchexcellence #ethics #goodgovernance
