Corporate Healthcare Transactions and Regulatory Attorney | Pharmacy Law | 340B | Privacy | Commercial Contracting
It’s getting late in 1L-law-student-law-firm-OCI-callback-season, which means I have thoughts—some might say unsolicited advice or perspective—that I wish I’d shared earlier but will share anyway, if for no other reason but to get them out of my head. And, of course, these are my personal thoughts and don’t necessarily reflect the views of my firm. I’m just one lawyer talking to potential future lawyers here. Pretend we’re having coffee. 1. Interviews are good practice. Approach it humbly, with curiosity, and as an opportunity to understand more and more about this industry and the various jobs and characters in it. 2. We (who do the interviewing) all know that paid internships are a big deal to most law school students. I wouldn’t suggest focusing on it, but you don’t need to pretend it’s not a factor. I had two little kids and a husband who was struggling in a bad work situation that didn’t even pay well when I did 1L OCI. We all have our stories. Don’t be afraid of yours. 3. At the same time, law firms are real businesses. The people you’ll be interviewing with are likely either owners of that business or hopeful to be future owners of that business. Summer associate programs are wicked expensive. Those owners and hopeful future owners want to ensure their investments in the summer associates they select will have reasonable ROI. 4. And also, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to want to be a law firm partner someday. ROI comes in a lot of ways, including from hard-working associates, future clients, and intangibles like being a good firm citizen who builds into those around you. 5. No matter what you do, you won’t click with some people who interview you. We’re a quirky bunch. And we don’t really have eons of time to ruminate on these decisions. Just like with practicing law, we’re trying hard to get it as right as we can as efficiently as we can. And, tough as it is for us to hear when we’re job-hunting, the reality is that most of us aren’t actually all that remarkably different from most of the others also interviewing. Anyone who gets a callback is probably capable of doing well. Don’t take it too personally or spin too much on it. And, that said, do listen to any feedback you’re given and take it back to the people who actually know you if you want another take. 6. Lots and lots of fantastic lawyers have navigated to rewarding and fulfilling legal careers without having a paid summer internship. If you don’t land one, do something. Get experience somewhere. The more interesting it is to you, the more it will help you be a better lawyer or law firm citizen, the better it will present in your 2L interviews and beyond. All the best to all of you running this gauntlet. P.S. Your resume is usually the first “work product” from you we’ll see. Try not to make unforced errors on it like typos, weird formatting, or inconsistencies. Use resources available to you at your school.

What does diversity, equity & inclusion have to do with Business Development? Murray and his leadership team -- true support from the top down! You can read an article below where I share views on Baker McKenzie's Business Development Summer Internship Program, which won the 2024 Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Award for Innovations in Diversity and Inclusion. Legal Career Coach for Lawyers and Law Students | Public Speaker | Ex-Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. | Ex- Dua Associates | Resume Writer | Interview Coach for Legal Jobs at Law Firms and other legal organizations
If you are continously interning with Tier 1,2 Law Firms in the initial semesters (1,2,3,4) of your law school it is a very big mistake. Why? 1. You are only focussing on brand name and each time you will get the team not according to your selectin of area of law, but according to the availability. This will make your cv diverse, with no sync in area of law. 2. Further, since you have interned with these places at such an initial stage, there is hardly any work that you can get allocated to. This leads to normal/ average reviews with nothing major to write in the cv. Further, you are only mostly exposed to research work and hence are unable to get any employable skill-set even after having such good law firm names. This leads to difficulty in getting future internships. 3. Lastly, since without having any understanding of most laws, your internships with such big org, will push you to form pre-mature negative opinions about some areas of law. ________________________________________ If you want to book a mentorship slot for personal guidance sessions on: why are you unable to hear back from law firms, how to make a career in law firm’s dispute resolution teams/ corporate teams or how to even get started, send me a personal message saying “START”, I will send in the pricing details of the personal mentorship sessions.
