We reserved many rights in our Montana Constitution to protect the state we call home and the way of life we enjoy. But if you need insider knowledge, a law degree, or a high-dollar funder to realize a right, then you don’t really have that right. That’s why we started Montana Transparency Project: to lower the barriers to entry for state information requests so that everyday Montanans can get involved and help create a more responsive and open government. The Right to Know is your opportunity to engage with your government. What do you want to know? https://lnkd.in/euUg5er5
In this New Year, we resolve to fulfill the promises of our State Constitution, more specifically the promises granted to us in Article II, Section IX. Montana Transparency Project is a non-profit, nonpartisan initiative dedicated to helping organizations and individuals prepare and keep track of public information requests–a service currently missing in Montana's Right to Know space. We understand that direct participation in democracy is a part of Montana’s heritage–from ballot initiatives, to our citizen legislature, to the Right to Know, Montanans are active participants in government. The framers of our state constitution included the Right to Know as a democracy-promoting provision; it calls on Montanans to take an active role in promoting government transparency. We believe that empowering Montanans to get involved through making information requests will help create a more responsive and open government that will better serve the needs of our state. Join us in creating a more transparent State and empowering our fellow Montanans.

Good capital for community development initiatives can come in many forms. We’re happy to have been in our nation’s capital last week as advocates for the U.S. Treasury’s New Markets Tax Credit Program, deepening and broadening our collaborative relationships with many productive, purpose-focused humans and entities in the space. We’re proud, new members of the New Markets Tax Credit Coalition, and we’re here seeking-out credits and other capital funding for their bearing on transformational initiatives afoot at the hands of many mission-driven Ys and their peer community-based organizations. No stone should be left unturned when knowing of the potential and impact on the other side. NEW MARKETS TAX CREDIT COALITION NOVOGRADAC INV. Law #3: The Law of Free Labor. The Law of Free Labor says, “People will work harder for free than they will for pay.” Sometimes we’re tempted to believe we have to tackle every task on our own. This usually flows out of the idea that we can’t afford to hire competent help. Or the myth that “I’m the only one who can actually get the job done.” Both are false notions. The Law of Free Labor recognizes that people will work harder for free than they will for pay. Consider your own experience. Remember that hot afternoon when you and your buddies scrubbed an unending string of automobiles at a youth car wash? At the end of the day, you declared, “I’ve had it. I’ll never do this again. They couldn’t pay me to work so hard!” That’s exactly the point. We’ll do all kinds of things for love (as volunteers) that we’d never do for money (as employees). #philanthropy #fundraising #strategicplanning #governance #boardofdirectors #theintentionalboard #askingaboutasking #majorgifts #majordonations #majordonors #development #advancement #capitalcampaign #feasibilitystudy #readinessassessment #boardretreat #askingacademy #charitableorganization #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #npo #npoleadership

Thanks Sandy Fernandez for this piece in the Chronicle - "To help these businesses succeed and build a more #inclusive economy, philanthropy can make complementary #investments in #smallbusiness training providers and community development financial institutions, #CDFIs — nonprofit lenders that provide affordable #capital to underserved communities. Unfortunately, in my experience, many well-meaning funders focus on one-off programs, such as grants for diverse entrepreneurs, when the bigger opportunity for impact lies in addressing broader gaps in small-business support." National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD)'s Small Business Program is an impactful place for #philanthropy to support small-business assistance groups in building their capacity to connect small businesses to affordable capital and coaching and help stabilize commercial districts. There are programs like ours and community groups with effective and culturally appropriate solutions and approaches ready to partner with philanthropy to create an equitable economy. Learn more about our program here: https://lnkd.in/eWh2QTCh, and ask me about how to support it! https://lnkd.in/eCJ48YeZ

Governments and nonprofits are in constant partnership to tackle today's most pressing policy challenges. Despite these long-standing relationships, there are often tensions that lead to inefficiencies and breakdown. In this article, I explain why that is and what you can do about it as a public servant or nonprofit professional. https://lnkd.in/gXUt9H6K
