"How can I earn higher rates as an ESL teacher?" I get this question all the time. Sure, we could talk about marketing, sales, and all that... But I think it starts with something more fundamental: Understanding your time is worth more. A teacher I’ve been mentoring just made this shift. This week, she taught her first private client... And earned 5x what she used to make on a platform she relied on. What changed? It wasn’t about adding more lessons. It was about: 1) Valuing her time and expertise. 2) Finding students who see that value. I know stepping into your worth as an ESL teacher can feel scary. I’ve been there. It takes time to build confidence in what you offer. But once you do, everything changes. 💬 What about you? What’s the biggest shift you’ve made (or need to make) to start valuing your time as an ESL teacher? 👇 #teachers #mentorship #ESL #mindset

Tips I wish I had known before becoming an ESL teacher 🙈 📑 📚 1. Be flexible: A backup activity is a lifesaver. It ensures that you can utilize the remaining time productively even if a lesson finishes early. Adapting on the spot is a crucial skill for any teacher! 📑 2. Lesson planning master: I highly recommend creating a long-term plan. It gives you a roadmap while being prepared to adjust based on your student's needs and progress. ❌ 3. DON'T ask "Do you understand?": Who here hasn't found themselves nodding along, even when they didn't fully grasp what was being discussed? Using CCQs and other forms of checking understanding during the lesson is far more effective than relying on a simple yes or no answer. It encourages students' active engagement and provides valuable feedback on their comprehension. 📈 4. Set attainable goals: Helping students set realistic and achievable goals motivates them and provides a framework for your teaching. It allows you to tailor your lessons to their specific needs and interests, increasing their engagement and success in the learning process. #Tips #Esltutor #Advice

How to Ace Your ESL Demo Class As an ESL teacher, the demo or model class is often a crucial part of the interview process when applying to teach at schools and academies. This gives the administration a chance to evaluate your teaching abilities firsthand. Nailing your demo class can be the deciding factor that lands you the job. Here are some tips to help you pass your ESL demo class with flying colors: 1. Prepare Thoroughly Find out the exact details like the age/level of students, number attending, and demo length. Devise a realistic, well-planned lesson with clear objectives, warm-up, activities, and assessment. Anticipate gaps in student knowledge and be ready to adapt. 2. Make it Engaging Interactivity and student involvement are critical. Design varied activities like games, role plays, songs, or short videos to keep students engaged. Ask plenty of questions and elicit responses. Move around and use positive reinforcement like praise or rewards. 3. Demonstrate Key Skills The school wants to see skills like classroom management, giving clear instructions, smooth transitions between activities, effective use of resources and technology, and real-time feedback. Show your ability to control the pace, energy and students' focus. 4. Highlight Your Strengths Are you an expert at teaching pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary? Zero in on your strong areas. Use your best practices, techniques, and creative ideas that differentiate you as an ESL instructor. 5. Project Confidence Speak clearly and louder than normal given the high energy environment. Maintain good eye contact and open body language that exudes approachability and authority. Stay upbeat, flexible and avoid negativity if challenges arise. 6. Finish with a Memorable Closing Leave a highly positive final impression. Have students recap and demonstrate what they learned. Thank them and give high fives or certificates of completion. Ask if they enjoyed the lesson. Getting through your ESL demo class successfully is a major step towards landing your desired teaching position. Demonstrate your skill, passion and performance - and leave the school eager to have you on board!
