As the UEFA Champions League gears up for another exciting final between Real Madrid C.F. and Borussia Dortmund, the spotlight is not just on the pitch but also on the financial disparities that have become a hallmark of Europe’s premier club competition. With booming TV deals and a record prize pot, the benefits seem skewed towards the wealthiest clubs, leaving lesser-known teams struggling to keep up. 1. How has the distribution of Champions League prize money changed over the years? In the first Champions League season 32 years ago, clubs outside the top five European leagues earned 64 per cent of the prize money. Today, these clubs receive less than a third of the total prize pot, highlighting a significant shift in financial distribution towards the wealthiest leagues. 2. Why is the Champions League format changing, and who benefits the most? The Champions League is expanding next season with an increased prize pot of €2.5 billion, up by €400 million from this season. However, the financial benefits predominantly favor the already rich clubs from the top five leagues, reducing the chances for smaller clubs to compete effectively. 3. How does the financial disparity impact the competitiveness of the Champions League? The growing financial gap means that the same clubs, particularly from the wealthiest leagues, dominate the competition each year. This reduces the competitiveness and opportunities for lesser-known clubs, as the substantial prize money cycle keeps the richest clubs at the top. #Broadcasting #SportsBusiness #Football #SportsBiz #Finance #Data #Intelligence

🇫🇷 Despite the challenges faced by the Ligue 1 in recent years, especially when it comes to the market for sports media rights, French clubs should rely on one of their traditional strengths. That being their capacity to develop young talent. 💰 While a model based on consistently selling the best talent is not sustainable, it offers a foundation upon which the league can build a more robust financial strategy. Since the summer transfer window of 2018/19, Ligue 1 has distinguished itself among the “Big Five” European leagues by maintaining a positive net transfer balance. With a net surplus of €218.8 million stands well ahead the Bundesliga (net negative balance of €83.7 million), La Liga (€-539.9 million), Serie A (€-1.1 billion) and the Premier League (€-8.1 billion). ⏳ During this transitory period, the league may also attract new investment. The devaluation of clubs and the availability of talent presents attractive opportunities for long-term financial gains. 🗞️ If you want to read more about the challenges of Ligue 1, check out our article: https://lnkd.in/dZmQsyBR #footballfinance #football #ligue1

Interest is growing significantly in women's football in Europe, highlighted by a recent string of record-breaking attendances in matches across the sport. While the vast majority of the value of European clubs is driven by the brand strength and revenue-generating capacity of the men's football programs, UEFA expects the commercial value of European women's football to grow nearly six times by 2033. With this growth, we expect European women's football clubs will become financially sustainable over the medium term. 🏴 The Premier League is the league in which the clubs made the highest revenue in the financial year of 2022. 📈 The EPL clubs have seen a huge increase in revenue in recent years, with a 20% growth from a combined revenue of €5168 million in 2020 to €6453 million in 2022. 👀 In comparison, the La Liga and Bundesliga clubs, which came in 2nd and 3rd, made a combined revenue of €6559 million in 2022. “Only” €106 million more than the Premier League.
