The European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) is showing the possibility and capability of the top-tier professional club game. Amazing work by Dominic McKay and his team to realize these numbers! Here are some interesting notes and comparisons to put these numbers into scale for the North American sports minds: 1️⃣ Average Champions Cup match attendance: 13,447 (+4% YoY) 2️⃣ 3.6M viewers in France is equivalent to ~34% share in France. 3️⃣ 41% market share in Ireland is amazing, which is approximately 2M+ viewers 4️⃣ To put the Ireland and the French numbers into scale for Americans, the Super Bowl had a ~43% share in the US with 123.7M viewers 5️⃣ 1.5M spectators is HUGE for the EPCR games, but more impressive is the 15% YoY growth 6️⃣ The EPCR Finals being played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 25th in London with over 62K tickets being SOLD OUT already is massive and will add momentum to the EPCR next season. The question for those of us in the US? Do these numbers seem unobtainable based on what we've seen in collegiate, semi-professional, or professional sports? And the answer is, NO. Not at all trying to undercut the EPCR and this massive success. Just noting the massive upside that the North American Sports & Entertainment marketplace holds for the sport of rugby, if it can be mustered correctly. Euro2024: A Lesson in Teamwork Over Individual Stars The Euro2024 has shown us that having big-name players only sometimes guarantees victory. We've seen surprising upsets where highly motivated teams without star players triumphed over those with top talents. Take yesterday's match, for instance: after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty, he insisted on taking the first try in the penalty shootout against Slovenia. His determination and leadership are commendable. However, the true star of the match was Diogo Costa, our incredible goalkeeper, who saved three consecutive penalties – a first in the tournament's history! Together with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva, who scored for Portugal, they showcased the power of teamwork. Cristiano has saved Portugal many times, but his teammates stepped up this time. This is the essence of having a solid team—everyone contributes to the success. If we increase our execution speed, we can win against any team. Now, Portugal will face France next Friday, and as a proud Portuguese, I will be singing our anthem and giving my full support to our team! 🇵🇹 Remember to celebrate the collective effort that leads to true success in sports and business. #Euro2024 #Teamwork #Leadership #Success #ForçaPortugal

EURO2024 is over! I congratulate all Spanish friends for winning a fourth title and setting so many records. I have something to brag about too. I ranked in the top 1% of all fans who created their brackets on UEFA’s site. Group C messed me up (as it probably did many others) but somehow I managed to get 3 out of 4 semifinalists right. Also, I picked the right winner in 8 out of the 15 knockout games. Lessons learned? Relying on teams’ performance during the qualifiers and especially the friendlies just before the tournament started is a much stronger indicator of current quality and strength than national rankings or past performances. I followed the former for most of my predictions and that helped a lot. Except, I fell in the “past glory” trap only when predicting France’s performance. That’s how I ended up picking France over Spain in the semi-final despite being so impressed with Spain’s performance in the qualifiers. So, how does this translate into business advice? 1) Challenge conventional wisdom. 2) Perform primary research all the time — things change and last year’s data may be too old. 3) Trust your seeing eyes — when you see a winner, believe in them. :)
