"I've come to learn that 90 per cent of the human race is too selfish to really change its behaviour just for the planet's sake, so finding a financial driver for these cleaner technologies is really important." While I disagree with the percentage (I think it's closer to 99%), I couldn't agree more with Johnny Kahlbetzer's statement otherwise in a recent The Australian Financial Review article. Human-induced #ClimateChange (and how to stop it) has been my passion for the last 3 decades, since I found out as a 7-year old that climate change would let glaciers melt. Back then I thought the solution was to make my parents' life hell by constantly turning all lights off at home, criticizing every move they made that caused carbon emissions and by maybe having fewer hot showers than I should have. Fast forward 30 years, I still emit #CarbonDioxide, and probably more than ever since I moved to Australia (and still fly to Europe at least once a year) and started a family. Why? Because I'm human, I'm part of the 90 (or 99) per cent of "selfish" people. I could have chosen not to get married to an Aussie in order to reduce my carbon footprint - but that would have been a dumb choice... My realisations over the last 30 years: ✔️ Climate change is a global problem that needs global solutions ✔️ People generally care less about climate change as soon as counter measures threaten their comfort (or even worse: their livelihood) ✔️ Therefore, in the long run the fight against climate change can only be won by: 1️⃣ Giving voters a concept against climate change that doesn't lead to loss of prosperity or comfort (otherwise, they will loose most of their voters after a couple of terms) 2️⃣ "finding a financial driver..." --> #CarbonPricing! 3️⃣ "...for these cleaner technologies" --> I'm convinced if humans made it to the moon in 1969, we have all the #brainpower needed to stop climate change nowadays. Given no. 1 and no. 2 the money needed for no. 3 won't be an issue...

I've delivered a lot of speeches on the Senate floor and the majority of them — 279 of them to be precise — address climate change. My “Time to Wake Up” speeches (YouTube https://lnkd.in/ezJV9SQw), many of which focus on the network of phony front groups and trade associations used by the #fossilfuel industry to block any meaningful #climatelegislation. That vast web of #climatedenial and #climateobstruction is one of the main reasons that we are in the climate crisis we face today. I'm here today to report that there is a common technique behind that smelly climate denial operation and the right wing donor operation to capture the Court. They both rely on massive amounts of #darkmoney. They both rely on a small number of ultra wealthy donors who supply that dark money. And they both rely on an armada of #frontgroups and phony corporate entities funded by those big donors to hide their hands. At this point it is actually depressingly familiar. It’s worse than just common technique. It’s the same entities — the #Koch operation, Americans for Prosperity, Donors Trust, Bradley Foundation, Scaife Foundation, Competitive Enterprise Institute, U.S. Chamber of Commerce… The list goes on and on and on. Thanks to all of you - our customers, partners, and supporters - we’ve been able to contribute half a pence for every pint of Red Fin enjoyed so far. The kicker for us - this initially very small area of rainforest we have helped to protect in Ecuador has the capacity to absorb and store 2 tons of carbon in the next year. It may seem small, but that would roughly be the same amount of carbon emitted by a regular sized diesel car driving 17,000 miles or about half the footprint of producing a new electric car. Yes EV’s have a carbon footprint too. Together with all the other sustainable businesses operating in our fantastic industry, these small acts can add up to something bigger: protecting habitats, preserving biodiversity, and giving back to the Earth that gives us everything we rely on. We’re humbled to play even a tiny part in the World Land Trust’s mission and inspired by the difference they make every day. This is just the start for us—there’s more to come as we continue to find ways to reduce our impact and increase our support for the planet. Thank you for helping us take this step. Bridgetown Initiative on the reform of the International Development & Climate Finance Architecture. Among other key priorities International Financial Institutions shall give stronger voice to developing countries in their governance and decision-making for climate resilience and related climate finance instruments.
