Government Affairs Director | System Transformation Strategist | Synthesizer-in-Chief | Collaboration Builder
What happens when two introverted education and health government relations wonks get together? We crack jokes, share engagement insights, and challenge ourselves to step into the spotlight more than those of us who thrive in quieter spaces are used to doing. Thanks, Ar'Sheill Monsanto, for encouraging me to post on LinkedIn! Here’s to the power of introverted collaboration and building deep connections!

Do you get a thrill (even a little bit) when you can help someone make a connection? I’ll admit – I do! The first executive position I took (away from my home town and starting anew) was kind of scary. One thing that 40 years of professional association and nonprofit work has taught me is: Your best ally is someone who is clearly a superconnector. Think networking and relationship building on steroids. Find out who those volunteer or staff leaders are who have been around long enough to know members, donors and corporate leaders both personally and professionally. Consider this. You are starting a new executive role. Joining a new association means new culture, new vocabulary, new issues, new personalities, new challenges and new opportunities. Often, everyone you meet will be new to you. The faster you can learn about nuances – the better. Oh – and be sure to surround yourself with more than one superconnector from more than one demographic and circle of members. Listen. Take notes. Learn. Store the data. And, absorb what you can while applying knowledge and analytics to what you hear and where to apply your energies. As you do… you may realize you’re growing into a superconnector yourself! I’ve adopted this learning into my professional and personal life and love the opportunities to pay it forward by making connections.
