Ohio Medicaid billing rules can be confusing. Many people assume the BH Provider Manual applies to all provider types. However, the manual and rules in this manual only apply to provider types 84 and 95. Sole practitioners, those in private practice are generally under provider type 21 and do not follow the same rules or fee schedule. This guide highlights some provider types of note for Ohio behavioral health.

Are your patients losing their Medicaid coverage? Since the end of the Public Health Emergency (PHE), States have begun a process “unwind” the expanded Medicaid eligibility granted during the PHE. Through January, Michigan has performed almost two million redeterminations. This has resulted in 687,000 people losing Michigan Medicaid eligibility. The population of Medicaid-eligible people is dropping by 35%. Approximately 535,000 of the people losing coverage are due to failure to respond to the renewal. Health care providers may want to encourage their current patients to participate in the renewal process to help reduce uninsured care. https://hubs.ly/Q02rybnh0

A top Department of Healthcare and Family Services official said they hope to learn by next month whether the federal government will approve an application for a new behavioral health model for the state’s Medicaid program.[Health News Illinois] Medicaid Administrator Kelly Cunningham told members of the Medicaid Advisory Committee Friday that they have “circled” June 17 on their calendar as the date when they’ll learn whether the state has approval for the certified community behavioral health clinics model. The program aims to link behavioral health, case management and other services together in a single site. “This can really give us the opportunity to really re-energize and reshape the behavioral health landscape," Cunningham said. Along with being designed to be a more “holistic delivery system” that combines behavioral and physical health, the program will have a prospective payment system, where reimbursements are based on a predetermined, fixed amount, she said. The state has provisionally certified 19 locations to participate in the program. If approved, Cunningham hopes it can be operational by the fall. If denied, they will explore other options to move forward with the program, whether that be a state plan amendment or a waiver. In other business, Cunningham said the agency plans to create a new position to oversee the implementation of the state’s 1115 waiver targeting the social determinants of health and behavioral health. Cunningham said the current team has done great work to get them to this point, but “we're going to need more resources, particularly to drive this towards implementation.” She reiterated they hope to learn by June about federal approval for the waiver. #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth #publichealth #communityhealth #populationhealth #healthcare #medicaid #socialchange

"What we found was that 40% of people treated in the Mount Sinai CMMI demonstration lived in New York City public housing…we found that the advantages, in terms of reduced ED visits and rehospitalizations, actually were seen on the Medicaid eligible beneficiary side." Through the hospital-at-home model, care teams have the unique opportunity to improve health equity by directly visualizing and addressing social determinants of health. Nine state Medicaid programs currently reimburse for hospital-at-home, and expansion is key to increasing access to underserved populations. https://lnkd.in/d5uzSnfq
