YOU DON’T NEED A MACBOOK 💻 TO LEARN A TECH SKILL All You need a strong reason to learn. Any reason is valid, as long as it's strong. -A curious mind -A stack of determination -A sprinkle of humor That's how you'll stay in for the long-term. Tech skills are the real stars, not the brand of your laptop!🙂 #techcareer #tech #learninganddevelopment

🌟 Enhancing Learning Through Accessibility Features 🌟 Utilizing accessibility features in software we use each day with our students like Google, Microsoft and Apple can not only level the playing field for our students, but it can improve learning experiences for all. Features like screen readers, speech-to-text, dictation, and closed captions aren't just helpful for individuals with disabilities. They also cater to diverse learning styles, making learning more accessible for everyone. Evaluate the accessibility of the content you are delivering to your students by asking if it is easy to operate, understandable, and able to be interpreted by assistive technology. Anyone else on the skills journey feeling like we're spoiled by Apple and Google with their fully integrated systems and user experiences? If you're a "truest" consumer (using one ecosystem or the other) all your devices sync seamlessly and your documents and files move so easily as you change devices. The reporting on usage is a dream too. In the skills space, it seems everyone has their sweet spot, but a great ecosystem that does talent and learning in totality well is yet to be seen. Let's hope for a future where we can experience a similarly seamless and integrated experience in the world of skills and learning. #SkillsJourney #IntegratedSystems #UserExperience #TalentDevelopment #LearningExperience

Major career anniversary klaxon! As far as I can tell, it was exactly 30 years ago today that I started the first day of my first job in the tech industry. That’s three decades of proven experience in development, management, and consultancy! It all began in 1994 with a newly formed games company, Edcom, and a broken down train that left me in the middle of nowhere, making me late for my first day. Since this was before mobile phones, so I waited for an hour with only a vandalised public phone box for company. Somehow I avoided being fired on the spot, and continued to build four games, including the pivotal “Grand Prix Manager” series for MicroProse. That progressed to writing more games, tools, 3D engines, founding a few Edtech startups, building IoT and digital signage systems (areas that didn’t exist when I started my career – BrightSign LLC, for example, didn’t launch until 2009), and working at Microsoft Research. Looking back on 30 years, I realised that I’ve built entire companies from the ground up (and watched some collapse back to nothing!), written code that runs on millions of machines worldwide, given 100s of presentations across three continents, and written 7 books to teach the next generation. Not bad for an idiot like me that, 30 years ago, should have taken the bus! As an engineer at heart, I know I’ll never properly retire since I’m always tinkering with something new cutting edge thing, teaching uni students to refresh (mine and their) fundamentals of CompSci, or contributing to myriad Open Source projects. But as an old person in tech, I’m caught somewhere between casual age discrimination and being a diversity hire! :) So maybe the next 30 years will see me fully embracing my side hustles: music composition, magic, or writing. Perhaps it’ll involve more advocacy, consultancy, and education. Or maybe I’ll need to change career completely? But to what? Answers on a postcard!

The Engineering Career Coach | Microsoft, Yahoo, SAP, Carnegie Mellon | Engineering with People Intelligence
Seema lost her job a year ago. Constant rejections, wrestling with stress, and parenting two girls—a whirlwind of challenges. My first assessment: - Top coding talent - But stuck in the senior engineer role for 14+ years - Has awareness of her difficulties working with others So, I asked: "If you could work anywhere, where would that be and what would you be doing there?" "Oh, I've always dreamt of working at Google or Facebook. I want to solve more complex problems." And therein lies the crux—tackling complex issues means mastering the art of collaboration with both tech and people. Fast forward six months, Seema’s transformation through the Top Engineer Method is nothing short of remarkable. She’s honed her skills in engineering, strategy, execution, people, and much more. But aiming for FAANG et al. demands a leap of faith in your capabilities. Her routine? Daily: - 2 hours dedicated to system design - 2 hours on behavioral interview strategies - 5 hours on LeetCode challenges of varying difficulties Weekly: - Two mock interviews - 4 to 5 hours of real interviews - 1 to 2 hours of coaching with me - And an hour spent on coaching workbooks It was far from easy. And she lost, a lot. One Friday, a recruiter said, "We're preparing an offer for you." A week later, they picked someone else. Brutal. Despite these challenges, Seema remained undeterred. She leaned into deep journaling, emerging stronger each time. By Feb 2024, she was negotiating offers from both Google and Facebook, ultimately joining Facebook as an E5. Kudos, Seema. Your relentless push redefines growth; an inspiration for your girls and all of us. Now, I've got something similar for you. Over the last 2 years, I've meticulously shaped my 1:1 coaching with the intention to help many through an online platform. The Top Engineer Method is the result of my 20+ years of engineering and leadership experience across Microsoft, Yahoo, Carnegie Mellon, and various startups. This method has already helped 40+ engineers move into higher roles with matching paychecks. I'll show you everything you need to learn to move from a Software Engineer to Staff, Principal, and Engineering Management. I have an early enrollment discount.
