Calling all caregivers! 🙋♀️🙋♂️ Did you know there are many community resources to support you? Try these resources: 1. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA): These agencies provide information on community resources and services for older adults and caregivers. You can find your local AAA through the Eldercare Locator service. 2. Use AARP's State Caregiver Resource Guides: AARP has created guides for each state that provide information on key programs, services, and agencies in your community. These guides cover topics like health, legal and financial assistance, and respite care. 3. Check with local senior centers: Many senior centers offer programs and services for caregivers, including support groups and educational resources. 4. Explore online resources: Websites like Benefits.gov and BenefitsCheckUp.org can help you find federal, state, and local programs you may be eligible for based on your specific situation. 5. Reach out to condition-specific organizations: If your loved one has a particular health condition, organizations focused on that condition often provide caregiver resources and support. 6. Contact your local Department of Health and Human Services: They may have information on caregiver support programs in your area. 7. Utilize VA resources: If you're caring for a veteran, the VA offers various support services and programs for caregivers. 8. Connect with caregiver support organizations: Groups like the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and the Rosalynn Carter Institute offer programs and resources for caregivers. Remember, many of these organizations can provide information on multiple services, including respite care, support groups, financial assistance, and educational resources. The transition from Personal Care Assistance (PCA) to the new Community First Services and Supports (CFSS) program marks a significant shift in Minnesota’s approach to caregiving. This change, which the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is rolling out, aims to provide individuals with greater autonomy and flexibility in managing their care. A new initiative in Indianapolis is working to address health and socioeconomic disparities in five historic neighborhoods near Indiana University Health's new downtown hospital. November is Long-Term Care Awareness Month! Caring for a loved one is a deeply fulfilling role, but it often comes with sacrifices that can impact every area of life. According to Genworth's Beyond Care Study: 👩👧👦 57% of caregivers have children under 18, juggling responsibilities between family and caregiving. 🤝 72% are in marriages or long-term partnerships, with 43% say caregiving strains their relationships. 💼 55% were employed full-time when their loved one needed care, and 51% report their jobs have been impacted by these added responsibilities. Long-term care planning helps provide support and resources, easing the burden on caregivers and allowing them to continue providing the love and care their families need. This month, consider the importance of preparing for the future—whether for yourself or your loved ones. 

We are excited to share findings from the 2024 National Carer Survey, focusing on young carers across Australia. This snapshot provides valuable insights into the lives of young carers, including geographical distribution, the nature of their caregiving responsibilities, and how these caring roles impact various aspects of their lives. Importantly, the survey points to key support needs of young carers. such as improved awareness and understanding of young carers, supporting them to self-identify and access services and supports. This is not without nuance. Satellite is keenly aware that many young people may not identify with the term 'young carer' and even more do not self-identify for fear of stigma or implications of disclosure. As a first step, we encourage all members of the public to look at the survey to gain a snapshot of young carers in Australia and what action needs to be taken. Granted by: Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health. Core partners are the Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing at St. John Fisher University and the University of Minnesota Institute on Community Integration.  SUMMARY of Presentation: As a result of ableism, people with disabilities experience diagnostic overshadowing, where symptoms are attributed to their disability rather than a potentially new or comorbid condition, leading to diagnostic errors. Dr. Ailey will briefly review the literature that inspired this work and further enumerate the inequity of diagnostic overshadowing. This lecture will address the “End Diagnostic Overshadowing” program and discuss the methods by which the program aims to identify and understand the mechanisms underlying diagnostic overshadowing.  Further included are discussions of the program’s goal is to develop methods to reduce it. This includes creating algorithms to identify people with disabilities at risk of diagnostic overshadowing or diagnostic errors and targeted education programs and decision supports for healthcare professionals. Building Together: A Solid Foundation for Orphan Care The heart of any successful endeavour lies in a shared understanding. During a recent gathering (caregiver orientation) with the wonderful caregivers from our new church partner, we (Forgotten Voices International) didn't just discuss expectations – we embarked on a collaborative journey. Instead of burdening them with pre-determined goals, we explored together: 👉 What success looks like for our 5-year orphan care ministry partnership. 👉 How each member can contribute their unique talents and perspectives. 👉 Open communication about potential roadblocks and how we can navigate them as a team. By engaging in this dialogue, we fostered a strong foundation built not just on expectations, but on mutual respect, clear communication, and a shared vision. We were reminded of the profound truth: failure or missteps don't have to define us. When we work together, we can learn from them and adapt our approach, ensuring the well-being of the children we serve remains our collective priority.
