🚓 Two questions and a story about my son and the local police: 1. What is your goal (aka what do you want to gain) from attending VRMA International Conference next week? 2. If you don’t have a goal yet, why not? “Mom, can I borrow $400?” Quick answer from me: “What is your plan and how can I help?” A few days later I was walking up our drive to check the mailbox and this beat up little white contraption rattles into view. Jacob is grinning from ear to ear, thrilled with his prize. I was quite shocked this vehicle was running, let alone legal. The interior was missing every single component that wasn’t absolutely necessary to operate the hunk of metal on wheels. Wires stuck out of holes in the dashboard: ❌ Stereo ❌ Cover over the horn ❌ Side mirrors This “vehicle” couldn’t pass inspection the way it was. He had a plan though: 1. Get a new windshield and side mirrors 2. Pass inspection and get registered 3. Practice auto body repair skills Random packages of car parts began arriving on our door step. There were more issues to repair than just the window and mirrors. He diligently worked on the hunk of junk all summer. When school started, he drove it to his collision repair classes. That’s when the local police began pulling him over. He hadn’t gotten the license and registration for the car yet so he swiftly learned to keep his title and insurance handy and plan extra time for the drive to school. Finally last week it passed inspection. Leaving the license office, with registration papers in the seat next to him, he accidentally clipped a curb. Tire blew. Brakes were messed up. Back to the garage. Where I covertly snapped this photo of him. He’s frustrated but he’s figuring it out. He knows that the effort he puts into this vehicle will come back to him later through crucial life skills he’s figuring out now. - How to handle frustration - How to change a tire - How to fix brakes - How an engine works - How to not get a traffic ticket —————— The effort and energy you put into a goal or a plan will have tremendous weight on the outcome. Note: ways that SHE could communicate the topic We started with various ways ANYONE could share the topic and then honed down to how SHE could share the topic. Because she shared the topic in a way that was directly connected to herself, incorporating her own stories, she ultimately CONNECTED with her audience and ENGAGED them. What REALLY happens behind the scenes with an acquisition? I stood on the airport sidewalk. The forest green Subaru snaked through the airport traffic and around the orange construction cones, sliding to a stop directly in front of me. She wasn’t holding a sign with my name on it, instead her arms were waving and ready for a hug as she came around the side of the car. My weekend began when I was picked up at the airport by the one and only Lauren Madewell followed by tacos and margs at a local hipster joint and topped off with farm to cone sweet ice cream. Much later that evening I stepped into the office at Tremont Lodge & Resort and greeted by Trevor’s brilliant smile. The Tremont is Blake Dailey and Trot’s lodge they’ve purchased and doing a massive renovation to in Townsend, TN. Also the location of the Boutique Hotel Con hosted by Blake. The event included tours of the various stages of the renovation project as well as staying on property the entire weekend. A few nuggets from the speakers: Michael Sjogren shared the moment of transformation in his life and why he invests in hospitality and how important mindset is Jack (Buck) Buczkowski shared that one to one relationships are key, “tell people in your life what you’re doing, keep them updated” Sara and Tony Robinson shared their struggles with deals, what went wrong and then what went right for the current one (ps they’re looking to hire a new property manager for the Kanab, Utah place) Sarah Weaver shared how critical it is to “show up and be in the room” as well as how she has built her business around her life Kevin Reardon had just stepped foot back in the US and shared the high importance of brand for not just getting business but also to attract top talent Blake Dailey shared the overview of his operations for his boutique hotels and the importance of communication with guests (yep, he uses Touch Stay digital guidebooks) Was an absolute delight to meet several Touch Stay Rock Stars in person, including Rachel Steeg, Luke Nelsen, Mitch Ehly, and several others. Plus seeing Kerri Gibson and meeting Kassidy Warren, Lucas Luquire, MBA, P. Jason Luquire, Tony Stancato, Pete Patel, Brendan Dauenhauer, Michael Grova, Ryan LeViseur and many more.
