The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement’s Post

It’s World Environment Day! 2024 Tyler Prize winner Johan Rockström work provides us with a new understanding of the word "environment" on this special day. His work sees the environment as the sum of many interrelated planetary forces that together protect our life as humans. Prof. Rockström's Planetary Boundaries framework revolutionized Earth sciences by integrating 9 systems that determine the functioning and the state of the planet. Planetary Boundaries framework revolutionized Earth sciences by integrating 9 systems that determine the functioning and the state of the planet. These systems provide life-support to humans and include systems we all rely upon, such as clean water, a stable climate, and vibrant biodiversity. They also interact and depend upon one another—and you and I are a big part of that! Every action we take, whether it’s brushing our teeth or driving to the store, impacts the environment. Planetary Boundaries help us understand how and why, empowering us—and policymakers worldwide—to take actions to support an environment that supports human life. Because that’s the one we all want, right?
