🛢 The fact that human activity affects the Earth’s climate and ecosystems is not groundbreaking news for decades. But now more than ever this risks the stability of the entire planet. 💡 In 2009, the Stockholm Resilience Center's former director, Johan Rockström, together with a group of 28 internationally renowned scientists proposed the concept of planetary boundaries. 📊 In 2023, for the first time ever all nine planetary boundaries were assessed and six of them are now transgressed. 🌍 "A global focus on climate change alone is not sufficient for increased sustainability. Instead, understanding the interplay of [the planetary] boundaries, especially climate, and loss of biodiversity, is key in science and practice". Across our college, which spans five departments, there are tremendous research breakthroughs. We have experts creating new materials, preparing for a green energy future, and improving how we adapt to climate change and weather risk, to name a few. But geoscientist Jesse Reimink's approach to a new theory for how the Earth's continental crusts formed earned our Robertson Research Breakthrough of the Year. The Earth's tectonic plates are critical to understanding the uniqueness of our planet: How it formed, how live was created and sustains, and how other planets follow a similar path. I think that the statement is fundamentally wrong, and that is what is wrong. I am reading another global warming catastrophe, biodiversity disaster, ocean acidification, when our grandchildren are in their 70's book... And I am seeing that same, very familiar statement. "We must..." Since I started studying the issues of planetary commons in the 1980's, I think every thoughtful author has said a lot of "we must...ims" and I think they have been wrong. I don't think that is how the world works. Your Mum tells you what you must and you build your self around that. What is true then? Those who understand the truth and see Earth's critical systems are shared elements of a whole living world must struggle at all times with those who see the world as resources they can exploit for wealth creation without constraint. This struggle will always exist. It is the balance of this struggle that determines survival in a thriving world, or the collapse of our world and the nature around us. The choice isn't about how we see the world. The choice is about what form the struggle you engage in takes today.
