New Change’s to drivers CPC given the Green Light On Tuesday 29th October the government, made changes to the driver’s certificate of professional competence (DCPC) training requirements. The amendments included a cut to the minimum length of the training modules from seven to 3.5 hours. However, the length of the entire course remains unchanged at 35 hours. Other changes include the decoupling of e-learning from trainer-led courses and moves to encourage more flexibility in end of module assessments, as well as the introduction of an accelerated pathway for returning drivers. Driver CPC Changes The regulations for the changes to the Driver CPC have been laid in parliament. The changes include: 1. Introducing a National Driver CPC covering driving in the UK 2. Allowing courses to be 3.5 hours long, rather than 7 hours 3. Decoupling e-learning from trainer led courses It is understood that the changes are due to come into force later this year, but no date has yet been announced. Further changes could also be afoot in the near future, with the authorities looking at introducing a periodic test as an alternative to the National Driver CPC.

What do you think about the recent changes to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC)? Given the green light in Parliament at the end of October, I think it’s a change that will make the roads much safer for drivers. The changes include reducing the minimum length of the training modules from seven to 3.5 hours. But, without changing the total course time of 35 hours. It will also separate e-learning from trainer-led courses to offer more flexibility. It will also help drivers who are not comfortable with e-learning as they’ll still have access to trainer-led courses. The change I’m most happy to see is an accelerated learning path for returning drivers. Removing the barriers for skilled drivers getting back into the industry can only be a good thing! We received an update from DVSA on the reforms for the Driver CPC today. The email said; " The reforms include: * introducing a National Driver CPC that will cover driving a lorry, bus or coach in the UK * allowing training courses to be done in blocks of 3.5 hours rather than the current 7 hours to allow greater flexibility * decoupling e-learning from trainer led courses * speeding up the process for drivers whose Driver CPC has run out to return to driving a lorry of bus coach in the UK. This work is still ongoing; these changes aim to be introduced in late 2024 or early 2025 Introducing a periodic test The results from the 2023 consultation on introduction of a test were mixed. We will continue to keep under review the possibility of the introduction of a test." So, not much more than we knew already. But perhaps this might mean we're moving forward on the changes slowly.

📢 Big News for Drivers! Parliament has approved changes to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) training requirements! 🚛 The updated rules bring more flexibility, giving drivers and fleet managers more control over their training schedule. Now, training sessions can be as short as 3.5 hours (down from 7 hours) while still meeting the 35-hour requirement overall. Plus, e-learning modules can now be completed separately from trainer-led courses, making it easier to tailor training to fit busy schedules.
