Branding has always been of interest to me, especially regarding how new products are positioned in the marketplace. Is Swatch Group cheapening the prestige/ branding of Blancpain (288 years old) by pulling it into a collaboration with Swatch, a modern brand? How does that affect the value of non-Swatch branded Blancpain pieces? Is this akin to seeing a brand such as Rolex marked down 30% or 40% at an authorized dealer, a-la Michael Kors at an outlet mall? Perhaps at this lower price point/brand pegging, Swatch is taking a chance that this collaboration will spark interest in Blancpain. Yet again, many consumers have destoyed the spirt of horology by just buying/flipping watches as if they were real estate, instead of enjoying and wearing the pieces they purchased. A previous boss once told me, “Make it an expensive brand , or make it inexpensive brand. However, it can’t be both”.
