Square Set Metals Recruiting: Hiring Trends for Jan 2024 Please find below our rearview look at hiring trends within the United States for January 2024, as reported in February 2024. Remember the old Andy Griffith show with Gomer Pyle, whose famous line was "Surprise Surprise Surprise!!" That's exactly where we stood in January with a surprise in employment starts that nearly doubled what almost every major economist predicted. 353,000 job starts were reported, which is the highest number in just over a year. Employers are still hiring and the economy is still hot. What does this mean further down the pike for interest rates? Most likely, we will NOT see rates coming down in the near term as lower rates could create an overheated economy. As far as Mining & Metals land goes: Primary Metal Manufacturing and the Fabrication sectors both gained ground "again" last month. Not in any major way, but still adding jobs which is a big sigh of relief for most of us. The only signs of fatigue in our industry is in a few select service centers with companies letting some sales people go and consolidating territories. Until Next Month, -Chris

Steel & Metals trivia for the day; "Run-of-the-Mill" meaning. The term "run of the mill" originated as a noun referring to the products of a mill before they were sorted or graded for quality. This usage dates back to at least the 1870s. The term "run" in this context refers to the quantity of work produced in a continuous operation. Over time, it evolved into the adjective form we commonly use today to describe something as average or ordinary. A similar phrase, "run of the mine," also existed, primarily referring to ungraded or unprocessed materials from a mine. However, "run of the mill" became more prevalent in everyday language, possibly due to the fact that manufacturing mills were often located closer to populated areas than mines, making the language associated with mills more familiar to people. The transition from a noun to an adjective likely occurred as people began to use the term more colloquially to describe everyday items or situations that were unremarkable or typical. Thus, "run of the mill" became firmly entrenched in the English language with its current meaning. The number 1 thing that sets successful companies apart from others is the ability to recognize inefficiencies, and fix them fast. I here this almost daily, "We do all our recruiting internally, we will hang onto your details." This is all well and good, if your recruitment team is effective. Unfortunately for most businesses, the recruitment function is severely lacking. As a business you end up going through the motions every month, ie - Hiring Manager to Recruiter "Find me X Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanics", Recruiter "I've put up an Ad"...... 30 days later, rinse and repeat. In the current market nation wide this can't be your only strategy. Companies like Titan IND WA exist to help while you fix up inefficiencies. Your company shouldn't be handicapped by inefficiencies. The beauty of using contractors, is you can turn labor on and off quickly. Utilize contractors to keep growth going. Utilize contractors to help fill gaps until your internal process catches up. If this speaks to you, get hold of me on 0477 392 699. #titanind #contractor #mining

A paycheque (or invoice from a recruiter) is always more visible than the lost revenue from leaving that hire's seat unfilled. This article helps you to close that gap, by understanding how expensive *not* hiring can be. On Tuesday we'll discuss ways to reduce these vacancy costs; stay tuned! https://loom.ly/mC94fNM #mining #hiring #recruiting #humanresources #recruitment #jobs #leadership

Square Set Metals Recruiting: Hiring Trends for the Month of March 2024 Another very surprising employment number for the United States. Most economists were penciled in a rise of 200,000 in the labor force. The actual number that came in was a gain 50% higher to 300k plus! A testament to the resiliency of the US labor force. As previously mentioned, this points toward less rate cuts this year than originally indicated by the Fed. They need to walk that fine line of keeping the inflationary numbers down while not snuffing out current and future growth. As far as Mining & Metals land goes: Primary Metal Manufacturing and the Fabrication sectors both had a net outflow of employees over the last month. As we all know, service centers have been leading the charge on this front, but a few surprise closures (ex: US Steel Weirton) amongst others may have been a contributing factor overall. Until Next Month, -Chris #steel #metals #hiring #employment #headhunter #recruiter #aistech2024

What's going on in the Aggregates & Material Processing sector? Working in recruitment means I have to keep my finger on the pulse of the industries we recruit in. Currently, the Aggregates & Material Processing sector is showing some mixed signals. Some firms are hiring heavily, while others are waiting until the new year to recruit. What's your take on the current market? 🚧 Here's what I'm hearing: ✔️ Stay alive till 25 ✔️ Machine prices are soaring ✔️ Material processing isn't turning a profit compared to machine costs ✔️ Plant operations are 40% down from last year ✔️ Salaries are on the rise ✔️ Material prices have been stagnant for years The industry is facing significant challenges by the sound of things but yet a lot of business are still hiring at a rate of knots... I'd be keen to hear people's thoughts, Drop a comment below or get in touch. #Aggregates #MaterialProcessing #Recruitment #Stayalive25 https://lnkd.in/er_Dth5U
