What's at the core of a bad client? It's a simple answer: bad clients don't trust you. -- From my awesome conversation with Jeff Echols and Katharine White MacPhail on Context & Clarity.
I think trust is one reason, but there are many others that can lead to a client becoming’bad’. And I don’t believe that they necessarily start out or intend to be bad clients. Factors like, a lack of education or understanding of the process, poor communication, misaligned expectations, a bad brief or not dealing directly with the decision maker. Architects should vet their clients and try and achieve an alignment on values at the outset.
This is true of any partnership where money is exchanged! The more trust there is in the relationship, the better the outcome.
Tyler, I believe it could also amount to different personalities. At first, those involved might think they’ll get along and everything will be great and go smoothly, but in time personalities come out and difficulties arise, hence a “bad” client.
Bad clients may think they cannot afford you, too, and that your cost is greater than what you will contribute. That negative view is bound to cause some problems!!
Thanks for sharing so much in this conversation Tyler Suomala
I absolutely agree with this line, 'bad clients don't trust you.' If the client does not trust you in the first place, no matter how good your service or design is, they will never be happy. It's going to be draining process for both of you!
Trust is a key part of any functional relationship! One of my own clients was talking about this last week.
I've experienced communication as a barrier here. Better transparency = Better client experience.
