We would like to share a nice success story with you: Farah Dameh and S. J. Pantazopoulou, our customers from Lassonde School of Engineering, York University, Toronto, Canada have released their publication using #ATENAsoftware for their analyses in the Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics. The title is: Lateral load resistance of reinforced concrete columns with brittle details. On September 12-13, 2024, at the Athens War Museum, Riccardo Previtali, Dam Safety Assessment Product Leader at ISMES, presented his research on the seismic behavior of earth dams. His paper, "Seismic Behavior of Earth Dams: World Relevant Cases," drew considerable attention from experts. In partnership with the ITCOLD YP working group, Previtali’s study examines dam responses to severe earthquakes, expanding the database from 86 to 129 cases, including the 2023 Turkey earthquake. This research, aligned with the Italian Dam Code, offers vital insights for enhancing dam safety and earthquake resilience. The importance of this research lies in its exploration of earthquake directionality and its significant influence on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures, an area often overlooked in conventional seismic design. Most seismic performance designs for RC frames fail to account for the multi-directional nature of ground motion, which can lead to inaccurate assessments of structural vulnerability. This research is crucial because it emphasizes the need to integrate earthquake directionality into seismic risk assessments and structural designs. The findings suggest that the angle of incidence plays a major role in determining the severity of structural responses, with deterioration in behavior observed as the angle increases.
