Last week, firefighters from Red Watch at South Shields Community Fire Station carried out joint cliff rescue training with the North East Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) 🚑🚒 Our rope rescue crews gave the HART technicians an overview of essential rope set up for cliff rescues before assisting them part way down the cliff as an introduction to joint rope working. This helps both services train should we be required to assist HART technicians in reaching a casualty at an incident. The HART crews then performed a simulated medical intervention on a casualty who had suffered a fall from a height. It was turned over to the fire crews to take part in various hands-on skill sessions, including airway management and tourniquet application. Crews from Byker Community Fire Station were also in attendance and invited to join in the trauma skills session. This training exercise shows how blue-light emergency service teams work and train together for every eventuality.

By performing chest compressions and rescue breathing, CPR helps circulate oxygen-rich blood to the brain and major organs, giving the victim a chance at survival until more advanced care arrives. Why is CPR Important? 🧠 Without immediate CPR, brain damage can occur within minutes. By acting quickly, you can prevent "Biological Death"—which begins 4-6 minutes after the heart stops—and significantly improve the victim’s chances of survival. At the beginning of this year we renewed our focus on safety and quality, by setting goals, reviewing and improving processes, and implementing training throughout the year. Practice, preparation, and forming good habits are the key to achieving the best possible outcome. Last Thursday, one of our crew members had a medical emergency, and the rest of the crew performed life saving measures until EMS arrived. They did everything right that day and saved the life of one of their own. CPR and First Aid certifications were renewed just a couple of months ago, not just with the field staff, but with the whole company. We've completed 10 other training sessions since the start of the year as well. Extra training cost time, and it costs money, but what is the cost of not doing it?
