What an October 👏
Scrolling through pictures on my phone with my daughters the other day led me to realize just how busy—and incredibly interesting—October had been.
It all started with MEPC 82, where a range of exciting topics were on the agenda, but also the unveiling of a model of a Maersk dual-fuel methanol vessel to be displayed at the IMO.
Among the most prominent MEPC-discussions were GHG-related measures, including a revision of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the adoption of a pricing mechanism. The latter, in particular, is vital to achieving the IMO’s GHG Strategy goals and supporting the industry’s shift to greener fuels.
This segways nicely into another October highlight: attending the naming ceremony in Felixstowe for one of Maersk’s new dual-fuel methanol container vessels, the ‘Alexandra Maersk’.
It was a monumental experience to witness such a vessel firsthand and hear the talented crew onboard explain its operations. Sharing this experience with colleagues, customers and friends from the IMO made it even more special.
The Alexandra Maersk is the sixth vessel equipped to run on methanol in both its main and auxiliary engines, and the fifth in a series capable of carrying over 16,000 TEU. She’s a true testament to what’s possible as the industry strives to fulfill the IMO’s GHG Strategy.
Looking ahead to November, it promises to be just as engaging.
I’ll be attending the Tradewinds conference in Copenhagen on Ship Recycling, where I’ll discuss the need for clarity on the perceived legal overlaps between the IMO’s Hong Kong Convention (HKC) and the UNEP’s Basel Convention (BC) regarding ship recycling.
