Every marketing nerd knows the satisfying feeling of pressing ‘publish’ on an exciting piece of content. At Tyre Stewardship Australia, I’m lucky to work with some of the most passionate and brilliant minds, including engineers and scientists (special shoutout to Dr Linda Mitchell!). But working in such a technically driven space means I often need to step up my game as a comms expert. Crafting messages that resonate with diverse audiences while staying true to the data is always a balancing act. For anyone whose role involves translating complex information into digestible content (i.e., for all the non-scientists in the room), here’s my advice: 1️⃣ Retrace your steps: Go back to the beginning. Why are we publishing this? Who is it for? At the end of a long project or report, it’s easy to lose sight of the value you originally set out to provide. 2️⃣ Get granular: Break down big concepts or findings into smaller steps. Map them visually (I love Figma). Assign a value proposition and target audience for each concept, then use these as the building blocks for your content plan. 3️⃣ Stay grounded in the facts: As marketers working in science and research spaces, facts and data should always remain at the core of our communications. We're proud to publish our 2023/24 annual report! This milestone edition marks Tyre Stewardship Australia's 10-year anniversary, as we celebrate a decade of industry innovation and progress towards a circular economy for Australia’s end-of-life tyres. 🎉 A huge thank you to our voluntary scheme contributors and accredited participants. Your commitment fuels our progress as, together, we work towards finding more sustainable outcomes for end-of-life tyres. Key highlights of the last 12 months include: ▶ Recognition of the industry’s commitment to sustainable outcomes with the ACCC’s reauthorisation of the Tyre Stewardship Scheme for another three years until 2027. ▶ For the second consecutive year, tyres were listed on the Commonwealth Minister’s Product Stewardship Priority List. ▶ TSA continues to support the National End-of-Life Tyres Options Project and contributed to the Western Australian Government, which is leading the development of the Discussion Paper. ▶ Global stewardship presentations and Canberra roundtable meetings, bringing global stewards together with tyre contributors, accredited retailers, recyclers, collectors, and government. ▶ $10 million invested in 70+ pioneering projects through the Market Development Fund, driving the development of tyre-derived material in products and applications. ▶ Research to better understand carbon emissions associated with end-of-life tyres, including studies on Life Cycle Assessment and pyrolysis, broadening understanding of the environmental impacts and opportunities in Australia. ▶ New Research Advisory Committee increases capabilities and expertise, enabling better assessment of inherent risks and opportunities in each funding application. ▶ Continued engagement with the mining industry to address sustainability challenges related to off-the-road tyres and conveyor belts. ▶ TSA receives ISO certification and becomes a certified carbon neutral organisation. The conference theme, 30 Years of Tyre Recycling: Innovations to build the Future, will illustrate the most important results obtained during tyre recycling history and the recently developed Innovations to build the Future. Key topics include critical challenges such as the reduced availability of EOL tyres for recycling due to uncontrolled exports to the Global South, pressures on the sports market, the need to stimulate the public works market, discussions on the Green Deal, and many others. Plenary sessions and spotlights will address industry trends, funding opportunities, and EU projects. Mark Hudson and Leigh O'Neill, MBA had the pleasure of attending the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Conference in San Diego, CA, where we joined industry leaders in important discussions on the future of sustainable agriculture. Mark delivered an insightful program update on behalf of the Ag Container Recycling Council, sharing our ongoing efforts to promote responsible recycling within the agricultural sector. Tyre Stewardship Australia commissioned consultants Marsden Jacob Associates and Blue Environment Pty Ltd to investigate the implications of the Transition to EVs for End-of-Life Tyre Recovery. Tyre Stewardship Australia has been supporting key  research undertaken by the University of Adelaide into the role of stewardship and how it can improve sustainable outcomes in the automotive industry.  The report has now been published, and among its findings it states that "more attention is needed to creating a circular economy to reduce the use of new materials and to recover resources.” The report also noted the importance of closing the gap between academic research and business practices. This report further strengthens TSA's belief that circular economy is key to improving sustainable outcomes across the automotive industry. This is particularly true when it comes to end-of-life tyres, which in Australia represent a loss of millions of tonnes of useful and valuable materials every year."
