There's a common misconception in lab leadership that being available 24/7 makes you a better leader. I'm here to challenge that notion. Here's why constant availability can be detrimental: ➡️ It promotes burnout: Healthcare is already a high-stress field. Adding the pressure of constant availability is a recipe for burnout. ➡️ It hinders decision-making skills in your team: If you're always available to make decisions, your team doesn't get the chance to develop their own decision-making skills. ➡️ It creates unrealistic expectations: Both for yourself and for future leaders in your organization. ➡️ It doesn't allow for proper work-life balance: Which is crucial for long-term career sustainability. ➡️ It can decrease overall productivity: Constant interruptions can prevent deep, focused work. Instead, I advocate for setting clear boundaries and empowering your team. This approach actually improves team performance by: ✅Encouraging autonomy and initiative ✅Allowing for uninterrupted focus time ✅Promoting a culture of respect for personal time ✅Developing a more skilled and confident team Remember, good leadership is about creating systems that work well in your absence, not making yourself indispensable. Conflict is inevitable in any workplace, especially in high-stress laboratory environments. Effective conflict resolution is a crucial skill for lab leaders. It can improve team dynamics, patient care, and overall workplace satisfaction. How do you typically handle it? My preferred approach is problem-solving and focusing on the issue at hand versus any personal differences. The sooner you get to a resolution, the sooner you can move forward. From experience, however, the best method often depends on the specific situation and individuals involved.
