“I see them as my family, and it pains me to see them harming themselves with poor eating habits. I feel a responsibility to help them.” – Ricardo Tejada, Tzu Chi Volunteer and Course Instructor 👨🍳 In East Palo Alto, where families face high rates of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, Tzu Chi’s Sabores del Corazon (Flavors of the Heart) program is creating change. 🍳 These bilingual (English & Spanish) cooking classes, led by Ricardo Tejada and Michelle Wong, empower families to cook plant-based meals that improve health, foster family bonds, and strengthen their sense of community. 🥕 “I love the sense of unity in this class. Gathering together motivates me to eat healthier and lose weight,” shared Teresa Castro, a mother of four. 💞 Blanca, another participant and a single mother of four, added: “I love that I can eat healthy with very little cost and make delicious meals with simple cooking methods.” 🍛 For Blanca, preparing meals on a tight budget and schedule has always been a challenge, but the class has provided her with practical solutions. 👩🍳 For Ricardo, these classes go beyond food. They’re about fostering connections, promoting well-being, and giving back. ✨ Flavors of the Heart is helping families not only improve their health but also come together as a community, creating a brighter future one meal at a time. 🥦 #HealthyEating #PlantBasedFood #TzuChiUSA

Hat curry? Maybe I wanted to order ‘hot curry’! These are two words that have the tricky short vowels, /æ/ and /ɒ/ (lips rounded but relaxed - /ɒ/) in them. Actually, curry has a short vowel too, the /ʌ/ vowel. Here are some words (as I say them) with the /æ/, /ɒ/ and /ʌ/ vowels. 🎩 Hat, rat, mat, fat, sat, bat, cat, pat, vat. ♨ Hot, rot, bot, cot, pot, not, lot. 🍛 Curry, hurry, worry, slurry, furry. ⚠ If you are in the north of Ireland, both ‘hot’ and ‘hat’ may sound very similar. ♨ ♨ ♨ ♨ ♨ I help multilingual healthcare professionals like you improve English pronunciation for clearer conversations with clients and colleagues and more confident provision of care. 👍 Like this post if it will help you be more adventurous in English! #sltelt #EnglishPronunciation #intelligibility

🌟 Word of the Day: “Can Opener” 🌟 Today’s word is “can opener.” 🥫✂️ A “can opener” is a handy tool used to open cans of food. It works by cutting into the lid of the can so you can easily remove it and access the yummy food inside! 🥫🍽️ #WordOfTheDay #esl #clasesdeinglés #aprenderinglés #englishclasses #learnenglish #englishvocabulary #CanOpener

At Alimentando al Pueblo, we have been working on building the infrastructure for a Latino food system; building relationships with and making some financial investments (via purchases) into small businesses in our Community. Our food system looks VERY different than the traditional one. We are working on bringing along businesses in understanding what currently exists, and what we are wanting to co-create and build with them. We are engaging them in a practice of imagining and dreaming with us. You know, cultivating a Community of Imagination (one of our values). We are working on some communciations materials and it came to a place of needing to define what this Latino food system is; because while we are wanting a "food system, but Latino" it is so much more than that. Shoutout to my gift of word for this definition: A Latino food system is a network of Latino businesses, Community organizations and members that engage in cultural practices, deepen relationships and create processes to ensure our Communal ecosystem has access to our cultural foods, belonging, and economic viability. The blueprint for this is here. Burien. PNW. What an honor to steward this alongside my brilliant Community.

Sweet turnip pie anyone? When I lived in France I most loved shopping at the weekend market (and most hated the weekend supermarket ritual). Once when buying veg, a lady beside me was telling market seller that his turnips were so sweet, she’d made a desert pie from them. You don’t even need to add sugar! She told him the recipe as she filled her bag with more turnips. What was this health miracle I wondered? I bought myself a load of turnips and returned home to try. My pie tasted like a pile of turnip in a pastry base. At a push you could serve it as a side of veg, but it was nowhere near the sweet dessert I’d believed I’d overheard. Not anything you should ever put vanilla ice cream on (trust me). That’s life lived in a second language. Communication errors are frustrating, and although sometimes they are really important, often they don’t matter as much as it feels they do. They cause us to tense up, stop taking risks and eventually move away from the language (yes, the one we worked so hard for). Our poor brain is risk adverse and as long as you feel vulnerable speaking or using your English it’s going to lead you towards safer, risk free places. And that’s going to cost your English. You won’t even notice it fading. The solution is to have a place where you can safely feel vulnerable, belly laugh about past mistakes and realise all the wins (so many) instead of just feeling the mistakes. For some it’s a friendship group, but that’s only easy if you have peers on the same journey as you. If you are you don’t have a place to talk, a gentle English top up will keep your English in mind until you need it. It’s enough to change how you feel about English, without feeling like work or stress or pressure (but with enough of a nudge to get you to show up). Because Top Up fits into your schedule (as and when you can) there’s just 4 available in November (with 3 left). Top Up. The most gentle way to get your English back on track. …… Have you misunderstood something with food or drink and not got what you expected?
