In 1966, during a discussion with three Catholic nuns, Master Cheng Yen was asked a profound question: What have Buddhists done for society? This question led her to deeply contemplate how to bring the Buddha’s teachings into the world to alleviate suffering. Amid Taiwan's challenges, she made the pivotal decision to stay in Hualien and founded Tzu Chi, transforming compassion into action and inspiring a global humanitarian mission that continues to uplift countless lives. 💕 ✨ Stay tuned! During the Chinese New Year, we will share a special series on Tzu Chi’s inspiring history and its humble beginnings. #MasterChengYen #TzuChi #BuddhistCompassion #GlobalHumanitarian #TzuChiHistory

Yesterday, my first peer-reviewed article was published! It's called "'So that we can safeguard your lives': The Jews of Aleppo between colonialism, nationalism, and Zionism, 1918-1946." The article grew out of my PhD project, which was devoted to the Christian communities of Aleppo during the same time period. Those communities still exist today (although they have been badly damaged by the Syrian civil war). The Jewish community of Aleppo, which was a center of scholarship, trade, and culture for millennia, disappeared decades ago. My article explores why that happened. Across the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the rise of nationalism set into a motion a process of ethnoreligious homogenization. Today, with the destruction of Nagorno Karabakh and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, it is clear that this process does not belong to the past. It's ongoing, and it's not slowing down. It's a somber reality, but an urgent one for anyone interested in how human beings can live together in peace, while also preserving their attachments to their homelands. If my article gives someone something to chew on while they're thinking through that problem, I'll consider it a success. https://lnkd.in/guKj-WGT

As the global spotlight intensifies on Tibet, a recent Tibetan delegation tour across Europe aims to raise awareness about the ongoing repression faced by Tibetans under Chinese rule. Personally, when I think about Tibet, I am reminded of the profound culture and rich traditions that have shaped it. Yet, beneath this vibrant history lies the struggle of a community fighting for its identity and rights. This makes me reflect on the importance of standing up for the voiceless and acknowledging the stories that need to be told. Here’s a thought-provoking question: How can we, as an international community, address these human rights issues more effectively? 🤔 Consider this alarming statistic: Thousands of Tibetans have been subject to forcible 're-education' campaigns. This highlights the urgent need for global awareness and intervention. To all of you out there, what actions or initiatives have you seen that effectively bring about change for marginalized communities? ✊ Let’s engage in this dialogue and share ways to support the Tibetan cause. 🇹🇯 #HumanRights #Tibet #GlobalAwareness #JusticeForTibet #StandWithTibetans

Rigobert Bihuzo Minani sj. Ph.D “I think it is our deeply-rooted Ubuntu philosophy that keeps us going today. It may sound naive to some Western cultures, but this approach is precious to us. We should take greater advantage of our ability to dialogue and harmonize these differences to build our states. It is partly thanks to this Ubuntu philosophy that Africa remains resilient. Our traditions teach us to allow our adversaries a path of retreat rather than crush them completely. This approach contrasts with other civilizations where the complete annihilation of the other can be taken as a goal. Our vision of life is influenced by Ubuntu, which is an integral part of our identity and culture. ” What is Ubuntu? “Ubuntu” means humanity - kindness, compassion, respect and care for others. Ubuntu is a Southern African philosophy based on the belief that an individual exists only through his or her relationship with others, with the community. The term “ubuntu” is a concept found in all Bantu languages (#Lingala “Bomoto”, #Kikongo “kimuntu”, #Punu “Butu”, Kinyarwanda and Kirundi “Ubuntu”...). It was revived with the end of apartheid in South Africa. In particular, it was used by Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandelan and Desmond Tutu to depict an ideal of society opposed to segregation during apartheid, and then to promote national reconciliation. https://lnkd.in/ep3FzfXW #Ubuntu #UbuntuPhilosophy #Humanity #Africa #Resilience #Compassion #Respect #Traditions #Community #AfricanCulture #Harmony #Dialogues #SouthernAfrica #NelsonMandela

The recent actions in Tibet highlight a distressing chapter in the continued struggle for the Tibetan people to maintain their culture and identity in the face of oppressive policies. The arrest of 10 Tibetans by Chinese authorities for practicing their Buddhist faith is a stark reminder of this ongoing conflict. In my research and experiences, crucial elements of Tibetan culture, such as religious freedom and expression, are being systematically undermined. The resilience and fortitude of the Tibetan people, however, remain steadfast. It's a testament to their unwavering spirit, which many of us can admire and learn from. Have you wondered what it truly takes to preserve cultural identity amidst such adversity? 🤔 Let's engage in this important discussion: - What can international communities do to support Tibetan and other marginalized cultures? - How do we ensure that cultural heritage is protected, even in modern geopolitical landscapes? 🌍 Let's amplify the voices of those who are being silenced. Share your thoughts and experiences on protecting cultural identities. #Tibet #HumanRights #CulturalPreservation #InternationalSolidarity

PARALLEL LEADERSHIP Israel as a nation under God, from when it was formed, was designed to hold parallel structures of leadership. This leadership in its structure existed on the lines of civil governance and spiritual leadership. The two parts were supposed to be independent of the other but were to collaborate in service unto God and country. This means that both politics and religion are expected to serve men by ensuring social good. For politics justice, peace, security, jobs, food sufficiency, accommodation, education, health and similarly related infrastructure are to be provided. For religion salvation, spiritual guidance, morality, hope, comfort, and other non- tangible needs of the soul are to be provided for the people. The recognition of a divided or parallel structures was fundamental even in an arrangement put in place by God. This means that politics are required by God to be pure, to be done without sin just as the priesthood which is to be practiced with purity. *Lesson* God recognizes the coexistence of politics and faith/religion for collaboration and cooperation for common good. MEDITATION: Numbers 27:15-22. #EddieAfriyie
