🍂✨ Yesterday's BIA Sales & Marketing Council planning session was nothing short of inspiring – and deliciously heartwarming! In the spirit of 'Friendsgiving,' we gathered not just as colleagues but as a community, sharing more than just strategic plans for the future. My husband contributed his now-famous rosemary garlic sourdough alongside a festive pumpkin spice sourdough, each loaf infused with love and a sprinkle of holiday cheer. As we broke bread, the room filled with an array of fabulous dishes, each accompanied by a story, a tradition, or a memory that made them special. It was a feast for the soul as much as for the palate. But it wasn't just about the food. Our session was a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared passion we have for the BIA's mission. We rolled up our sleeves and laid down the groundwork for what promises to be an incredible year ahead. We're talking about a calendar brimming with engaging events, strategies for dynamic membership growth, and boundless opportunities for networking. Most importantly, we're united in our commitment to support the BIA's vital mission: to get more homes built in San Diego. We understand the importance of community, of having a place to call home, and we're dedicated to making that a reality for more people. As we look to the future, we're filled with gratitude and excitement. We're ready to tackle challenges, celebrate successes, and work hand-in-hand with all of you. Here's to a year of making a difference, building connections, and creating homes where stories can unfold. It’s #StudentVolunteeringWeek and a reminder to appreciate the impact and time that students put into their communities.   It's also an important reminder that volunteering is a crucial element of dietetics and has many benefits for the volunteer and the dietetic profession.   In this blog, I underline three main reasons why I think dietetic students and dietitians should get involved in volunteering with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and also discuss my own experiences. Gifts for Houseguests "Always show up with something in hand" is an idea that many are familiar with. House-guests are expected to give a thank-you gift to the host either on arrival, during their stay, or sent afterwards. Some house-guests prefer to say thank you by treating their host or hosts to dinner out during their stay, or by buying groceries and making dinner one night. For gifts, something along the lines of a good bottle of wine or a nice bouquet of flowers is sufficient for an overnight stay, while a longer stay may require something more. I came across the news today that NSW Government is launching a parliamentary inquiry into the impacts of loneliness (Ref: https://lnkd.in/eErqnbDq), it struck a deeply personal chord with me. This isn’t just a policy issue—it’s something I’ve lived through in the most challenging way During the pandemic, I made a personal decision not to get vaccinated. It was a choice that led to many people (including life long friends and family) turning their backs on me, and I found myself more alone than I’d ever been in my life. The loneliness was overwhelming. My hair even started falling out from the stress and isolation. It was a time when I felt completely ostracised, like I didn’t belong anywhere. That experience taught me just how much we all need one another. We’re wired to be connected, to be part of a tribe. When that’s taken away—when we’re isolated or cast out—it can feel like a piece of us is missing. But it also showed me the power of community, even when it feels out of reach. OneAnother was created at the beginning of the pandemic, as I wanted to build a space where people could reconnect, no matter what their circumstances. We started hosting community connection events, and promoting frequent acts of kindness to bring people from all walks of life together. It wasn't just about socialising, or volunteering — our community is about finding a sense of purpose, rediscovering our values, and practicing self-compassion. They’re about making sure no one ever has to feel as alone as I did. I believe that by investing in our own purpose and values, and by being kind to ourselves and others, we can start to rebuild that sense of community. It’s not just about having people around—it’s about truly connecting with them on a deeper level. When we do that, we can become a collective again, a society where everyone feels they belong. The government’s inquiry is a hopeful sign that we’re starting to take loneliness seriously. But real change starts with each of us, by reaching out, showing up, and being there for one another. Because at the end of the day, we all need someone to lean on.
