U.S. Department of Energy - Grid Modernization Initiative’s Post

🆕: Today, OE announced the selection of Southern Company for a $2.4 million project on Distribution Communication and Control Technologies Research, Development, and Demonstration. Through this funding, OE’s research partners will be able to experiment with new approaches & technologies on the operating grid without risking disruptions to critical energy services. ⚡️ What does this mean? The grid is constantly evolving and adding new resources like solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles. This new infrastructure will require a more advanced grid with new tools, devices, & operating methods. Digital twins–detailed software models of physical systems–provide a means of conducting this experimentation without putting the current in-service electric grid at risk.
