This week Jose J. Rodriguez, assistant secretary of our Employment and Training Administration, visited a Philadelphia Job Corps Center and learned how the program is preparing them for careers as emergency medical technicians. He also participated in a regional summit which brought together grant recipients from across the area to hear how they’re creating opportunities for all workers to access good jobs as a part of the Biden-Harris administration’s Investing in America agenda. Here’s an article about the Red Cross Summer Youth Volunteer Program here at BJACH, as told by one of our very own youth volunteers!
We owe it to the next generation to share our experiences and prepare them for their future careers. The American Red Cross Summer Youth Program does just that, by exposing teens to a variety healthcare opportunities and an inside look at the ins and outs of running a Defense Health Agency military medical treatment facility. Our public affairs officer, even enlisted the help of one our youth volunteers, Bresiah Ramsey, to take photos, provide social media content and write a commentary about her experiences with the program. "In addition to rotating through the hospital, I was also “voluntold” to help as assistant public affairs officer by my mom who works at BJACH. We had vacation planned and I would be missing the last week of the program. My mom’s supervisor is the public affairs officer and suggested a way to get the volunteer hours I’d be missing by “covering” the program from a participant’s perspective," she said. Service Academy Appointment Process Starting-Senator Rick Scott. Preparing for a Service Academy Appointment starts years earlier than the formal application to your US Senators, US Representative to the House, and if eligible, other authorized appointment officials. My journey to appointment and graduation started between 6th & 7th grades at our county fair with a question to a senior AF NCO Recruiter ... "How can I become an astronaut?" Much credit to this Recruiter for speaking with me! A medical issue prevented flight status, but I graduated and served in other valuable roles. Do you know someone who might want to get paid to get a highly-regarded degree without debt, and a guaranteed job upon graduation? https://lnkd.in/eX7S558r

Higher Education Leader | Continuing, Professional, and Online Education | Adult Education | Correctional Education
For our military friends(and beyond) looking to earn a great bachelors degree that is prior learning experience eligible, and a great way to leverage your L&D/training knowledge, check out the B.S. in Workforce Learning & Development launching at UNCW this Fall 2024. I advocate recognizing prior learning experience. It not only shortens your time to degree but just makes sense. Why make students repeat what they can demonstrate they already know? https://lnkd.in/enundqEk

Servant leadership starts here.
If you know a high school student, you likely know their anxiety about plotting their future. College, major, career, how to pay for it???—all vexing questions among endless options. Help them with some clarity: - Apply to Texas A&M University (admissions.tamu.edu/) and the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets (corps.tamu.edu/). - Apply for AFROTC scholarship (afrotc.com/scholarships/). If they get it, their tuition is paid for and A&M kicks in room and board. If they don’t, they’ll be eligible for the same benefits in their junior year. - Listen to advice and mentoring on military career field choices along the way from our experienced staff and career days - Graduate with a guaranteed job as a United States Air Force or United States Space Force officer with a meaningful career. We’re moving lots of motivated youth to the next step of that proven process every year. afrotc.tamu.edu

ATTN: Military Spouses with Advanced Degrees! My wife, Elaina DaLomba, PhD, OTR/L, MSW, is recruiting participants for a follow-on study to a pilot that was completed in 2021. If you’re interested (sorry, no mil-to-mil), please read below. Thanks! “We welcome your participation in a study about your experiences in finding, maintaining, and advancing your career as you’ve lived a military lifestyle. Who can participate? Active duty spouses (civilians), married for 5 or more years, who have experienced at least one military-connected move, and have earned a master’s degree or higher. What will I be asked to do? Answer a brief survey about yourself, career satisfaction, and your ability to handle challenges in life. Then participate in an interview about your career experiences with the primary researcher, Elaina DaLomba, PhD, OTR/L. How long will it take? The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and the interview about 30-60 minutes (depending on how much you care to share). You do not need to participate in both portions of the study. Will I be paid to participate? There is no reimbursement for participating in this study, but your contributions may help the researchers and program/policy makers better understand what military spouses with advanced degrees face as they try to maintain and advance their careers. This may lead to new programs or policies to help you and others in your situation. Do I have to participate and answer all the questions? You do not have to participate and can decline to answer any questions. You can also drop out of the study by letting Dr. DaLomba know that you no longer wish to participate. What if I still have questions? You may contact Dr. DaLomba at any time to get more information by email at ejdalomba@yahoo.com.” (No federal endorsement intended.)

An interesting article by LTJG Ludlam regarding shortening U.S. Coast Guard Officer Candidate School (OCS). Taking advantage of our prior enlisted Sentinels (mustangs) is one way to shorten OCS—however, we must also look into more programs that allow for the direct commission of Coast Guard Officers considering the USCG does not provide specialized training (secondary schooling) to officers leaving OCS. This takes advantage of skills learned outside of the USCG and gets our Officers into the fleet faster for on-the-job training and experience.
